Woman’s brain worm infection confirmed after eggs grow tails in lab test

What?!? The late stage larvae can tunnel through skin? So it’s not just contaminated food, but you could potentially be wading through somewhere (like a rice paddy) and get infected???

Agility’s new humanoid robot will stop, squat to avoid harming human coworkers

Was it last month that Hyundai looked to put Boston Dynamics robots in an auto plant in Korea and the union went on strike to protest?

German company becomes first in Europe to launch fully commercial orbital rocket

Great article & great to see EU companies besides Ariane succeed! But there seems to be a rendering issue with the fonts. I’ve got it configured for large fonts, but it alternates with the middle part of the article shifting to a small font before going back to the large font. See snapshots...

Trump calls for creation of a “space academy” to train future NASA leaders

Hmmmm… he gave out four congressional medals… so, did he notice he gave one to a citizen from his current arch enemy?

Americans in Congo barred from returning home amid Ebola outbreak

Got this email yesterday from Customs and Border Protection (I’ve got global entry): Dear Trusted Traveler Program members, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a public health order affecting travelers who have recently been in Uganda, Democratic Republic of the...

China recovered its first reusable rocket and showed a new way to do it

Is there a historical reason why the Long March series doesn’t seem to have any nomenclature consistency? E.g. 10b being smaller than 10. 9 being the next uber-rocket, etc? Is this a case of disparate development groups in the government getting assigned a number and then independently...

Here’s why the failure of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket is so catastrophic

I wonder how this new data point looks like for the Space Force’s conservative safety radius calculation around each pad for methalox rockets. Does this pretty much vindicate their calculations and sink SpaceX/BO’s attempts to get them to reduce the radius?

Rocket Report: Falcon Heavy is back; Russia’s Soyuz-5 finally debuts

I noticed on the Falcon Heavy live stream that the Viasat-3 was deployed at around 0.25kps out past 30,000km after the 3rd and final burn, as opposed to 3kps which I think is the usual speed at geo. Does this mean that it was deployed in a GTO and the satellite has to use its own thrusters to...

As the most severe Linux threat in years surfaces, the world scrambles

This! We've been telling customers to patch (if available) or run the following as root (after confirmation on test systems of course!): Disable the vulnerable algif_aead kernel module: echo "install algif_aead /bin/false" > /etc/modprobe.d/disable-algif.conf rmmod algif_aead (Ignore errors if...

Errant upper stage spoils Blue Origin’s success in reusing New Glenn booster

The bizarre thing is that lots of mainstream press seem to have missed this (or BO’s press release to them only mentioned the successful landing and they didn’t bother to check the whole story?) I’ve noticed that articles on both Reuters and the Economist only mention the successful landing and...

Google shoehorned Rust into Pixel 10 modem to make legacy code safer

Would this mean that Apple is potentially more “secure” in that they don’t have the problem of decades of old code with their in-house modems? Or is it just the hardware that is new and they inherited/leverage lots of crusty code from Intel and other acquisitions, so it’s a wash?

Four astronauts depart for the Moon with a fiery send-off from Cape Canaveral

Yeah, why no rangefinder? Is that something else that is delayed or was that not in Orion’s design?

There can (still) be only one: Highlander is 40

The second movie was definitely bizarre, but I still have a soft spot for the hilarious airplane safety video. View: https://youtu.be/kPr25FafaZE?si=zFB162WZhES8L0FU

Be on the lookout for flesh-eating flies, CDC tells clinicians in alert

Was it ever established how they breached the Darien gap a few years ago? Or was it always accepted that the containment measures were never going to be 100%?

Yeah, JAXA told the Japanese media it wasn’t him.

Samsung squashes hopes that it will release its Ballie home robot

Assuming the person remembers to charge it every day. One of those life alert necklaces with a button to press may be more feasible due to longer battery life. But again dubious - I recall my grandparents had one and always had it hanging on a coat hook.

SpaceX launches 10,000th Starlink satellite, with no sign of slowing down

It seem that there are 1216 starlink satellites that are operational but not in operational orbit based on the article’s numbers. Assuming 28 per flight and a launch every 3 days, that means it takes 130 days from launch to get to operational orbit. Is that right?

India safely launches a $1.5 billion satellite for NASA

The article mentions one reason about the cost being: So… NASA says NISAR is planned for 3 years, so does that mean $1.5B is pretty average for such a mission?

2025 Polestar 3 drives sporty, looks sharp, can be a little annoying

Definitely this! Was over at my dad’s place and drove his i4. BMW adds insult to injury by adding a fake blue sky to the landscape map (a.k.a. a horizontal blue bar) that further reduces the map height by almost 1/3rd. Idiotic…

Local cuisine was on the menu at Cafe Neanderthal

Truth be told, natto is pretty divisive in Japan too. Half the country loves it, half hates it (especially the Osaka area). The size of the soybeans used also helps determine how intense the flavor is. Bigger beans typically means bolder flavor. Funnily enough, the most popular natto brands...
