‘Zootopia 2’ Jumps To $556.4M Global Opening For Biggest WW Start Of 2025 – International Box Office
SUNDAY UPDATE: Disney’s Zootopia 2 has continued its wild ride throughout this weekend, landing the biggest global launch for any movie in 2025 at an estimated $556.4M through Sunday. The international box office portion of that is $400.4M.
There is a lot to unpack here, including many records and the performances of other movies in the marketplace, to wit: Wicked: For Good is closing in on $400M global.
Here is how Zootopia 2 is rolling out where international and global are concerned. This is the highest global animated opening of all time (at current rates in the same suite of markets); highest animated non-local opening of all time in China; highest global opening ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios (current rates, same suite of markets); highest global opening for any animated film in Disney history; highest global opening for an animated sequel ever – Disney owns the top 5. The 4th biggest global opening ever (reported box office).
Let’s add to that Zootopia 2’s opening weekend is 239% ahead of the original globally.
I have been writing about the importance of this movie in China, and it has exceeded expectations. I again caution that China is not all of a sudden a reliable market, but this Wednesday-Sunday performance ($271.6M) is definitely worth celebrating.
This is the 6th highest opening ever in China amongst all films both local and non-local; and the 2nd best non-local film opening of all time in China (behind Avengers: Endgame).
Here are some other international highlights:
Highest animated opening of all time in China for a non-local title
Biggest non-local movie in China since Endgame
Topped Zootopia’s China total in just five days
Highest single-day gross of all time for a studio film in China (Day 4, surpassing Endgame).
Biggest studio opening of 2025 internationally
4th highest international opening of all time (reported box office)
Biggest Hollywood animated international bow ever (current rates, same suite of markets)
Opened No. 1 in all markets except for the UK and Philippines
The Top 10 markets out of the gate are: China ($271.6M), France ($14.6M), Korea ($13.7M), Mexico ($10.4M), Germany ($8.8M), UK ($8M), Italy ($6.4M), Taiwan ($4.5M), Australia ($3.8M) and Spain ($3.8M).
In Europe as a region, Z2 grossed $68M, only coming in No. 2 in the UK where Wicked: For Good is still charming the top spot. In Asia Pacific (excluding China), the animals amassed $33.8M, including the biggest studio animated opening ever in Taiwan; biggest WDAS/Pixar animated opening of all time in Taiwan and Vietnam; top studio opening of the year in Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam; and the biggest Hollywood animated opening of 2025 in Australia, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
And, in Latin America, $27M accounted for 80% market share across the region and No.1s everywhere.
Japan releases next weekend.
In Imax, the global opening was $31.8M including the top opening ever for November both worldwide and internationally and best best for a family or animated title. In China alone, Zootopia 2 set the following milestones: Biggest midnight show, opening day and opening weekend box office for a Hollywood animated title in history; 2nd highest opening weekend box office for any animated title.
Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment commented: “The incredible response to Zootopia 2 reflects both its worldwide appeal and the remarkable work of our filmmakers and cast. It’s a proud moment for Disney Animation and all of us at Disney, not to mention a great way to start the holiday season.”
Meanwhile, Universal’s Wicked: For Good is also having an enchanted holiday season, closing in on $400M global. The sequel added $29.4M in 78 offshore markets (-57%) for an international cume of $122.8M after the sophomore session. The global total is $393.3M. Overseas performance is in line with the first Wicked.
Notably, in the UK & Ireland, Wicked: For Good held the No.1 spot above Zootopia 2, grossing $10.8M to reach a $42.7M cume. This makes the Jon M. Chu sequel the market’s 5th biggest title of the year, having overtaken the lifetimes of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, How To Train Your Dragon and F1 this week. At the same point in release, Wicked 2 is above Wicked, Frozen 2 and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in the UK.
Other highlights include W:FG topping La La Land and Maleficent in Australia; Les Misérables in Germany; Barbie in Korea; and Jurassic World Rebirth in Philippines where W:FG is now Uni’s biggest title of the year.
The Top 5 markets to date are: UK ($42.7M), Australia ($13.7M), Germany ($6.2M), Korea ($5.5M) and Mexico ($5.4M).
China releases on December 24, followed by Japan on March 6.
Lionsgate’s Now You See Me, Now You Don’t conjured another $16.1M in 85 markets, per comScore. The international total is now $137.3M for $187M global.

PREVIOUS, SATURDAY UPDATE: Disney’s Zootopia 2 is now poised for an estimated $525M+ global opening through Sunday. The worldwide total through Friday is $233M with the international box office accounting for $135.3M of that.
A mega driver here is China where Z2 had a massive $104M (RMB 737M) in that market alone on Saturday (note that Saturday’s China is not included in the global/international totals above).
As previously reported, China is digging the return of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, with Z2 becoming the biggest studio movie of the year so far in the market and repping the biggest start for a U.S. title since 2021. Its astonishing Saturday number is a massive increase over Friday of 160%, and in local currency terms, overtakes Avengers: Endgame for the biggest single-day gross for a Hollywood movie in the market.
Talk about a turnaround for China’s turnstiles which were in serious need of some grease. This phenomenal start for Z2, however, does not mean Hollywood is out of the woods in the market but the performance is certainly encouraging.
Elsewhere, Z2 opened in a further six material markets on Friday, including Spain and UK, taking the full total to 51 material markets to date (Japan goes in December).
Among the Friday Europe openers, Zootopia 2 was No. 1 in all markets save the UK where Wicked: For Good is still bewitching auds. Z2 nevertheless landed the 3rd highest Walt Disney Animation Studios opening day of all time (behind Frozen 2 and Moana 2) and the highest animation opening day of 2025. Spain debuted to No. 1, similarly the 3rd best for WDAS.
The Top 5 through Friday are as follows: China ($94.2M), Korea ($4.6M), France ($4.5M), Mexico ($3.7M) and Germany ($2.8M).
We will have a full update tomorrow.
FRIDAY UPDATE: Disney’s Zootopia 2 is continuing its wild(e) ride. The estimated global box office cume through Thursday is $133.2M. That includes $59.2M in North America and $74M at the international box office across two days. Overseas launched in 17 markets on Wednesday, with Thursday adding 28 hubs.
China is a big part of the offshore performance, and though it appeared (as China often does) a sort of wild card beforehand, the market is totally dialed in. To wit, and as we reported below: Zootopia 2 had the biggest opening day for a U.S. animated film ever there on Wednesday. And it is not slowing. Not included in the global total above is China’s Friday which was worth another estimated $40M. This brings the total there through three days to over $94M with play expected to continue strongly through Saturday and Sunday. Maoyan has increased its lifetime estimate for Z2 to RMB 3.2B ($450M).
This is proof that the first movie’s performance in the fickle market wasn’t a fluke – but let’s also look at other Z2 performances.
It’s opened No. 1 in nearly all international markets including record launch days for a studio animated title in France, Germany and Italy during 2025. And that’s with the weekend still to come.
Thursday’s key openers include all of Latin America, and all at No. 1, with an 82% regional market share. Notably, Mexico’s $1.6M start was the 3rd highest WDAS opening day of all time (behind Moana 2 and Frozen 2).
In Asia Pacific, Z2 opened No. 1 in all markets on Thursday. This includes Australia at 97% ahead of Zootopia. In Europe, Z2 was No. 1 everywhere.
The Top 5 through Thursday (and not including China’s Friday estimate) are: China ($54.3M), France ($2.9M), Korea ($2.8M/estimated $4.6M through Friday), Mexico ($1.6M) and Germany ($1.3M).
Today sees further openings in Spain and UK as well as Finland, Turkey, India and Vietnam.
We will continue to update through the weekend.
PREVIOUS, THURSDAY, UPDATE: Walt Disney Animation’s Zootopia 2 has hopped to an opening Wednesday of $81.1M globally, including $39.5M from domestic and $41.6M from 17 international box office markets.
Along with the North American milestones the sequel has notched, Z2, as we noted yesterday (see below), scored the biggest opening day in China ever for a Hollywood animated title at $34M, which is also the biggest launch-day gross for a studio movie there since May 2021.
The Thursday estimate from China (not included in the global total above) is RMB 143M ($20M), which takes the early global run to over $100M. Also note that Korea added an estimated $1.1M on Thursday for a local running total of $2.84M.
In pure Wednesday play, Zootopia 2 was No. 1 in China and Korea, and most of the other international markets where it launched. In France, the opening day was the 2nd biggest of 2025, behind Lilo & Stitch and the 3rd best for Walt Disney Animation ever behind Moana 2 and Frozen 2.
Germany notched the biggest studio animated opening of the year and the 3rd best for WDAS. Italy was the highest studio animation opening of 2025.
We will have much more to report throughout the weekend as Z2 adds the rest of overseas markets save Japan. For now, and through Wednesday (ie, not including the early Thursday estimates for China and Korea), the Top 5 are: China ($34M), France ($2.4M), Korea ($1.7M), Germany ($700K) and Italy ($600K).
PREVIOUS, WEDNESDAY: Walt Disney Animation’s Zootopia 2 is defying the trends of the past year — and beyond — for Hollywood in China, nabbing the biggest opening day and highest single-day box office for a U.S. animated film ever in the market. With an RMB 240.2M ($34M) estimated opening Wednesday, this is also the biggest launch day for a studio movie since May 2021 and the 10th best for Hollywood of all time.
The Maoyan audience score is a fantastic 9.7, with the critical ranking on Douban at 8.7. Comparatively in Maoyan scores, Zootopia had a 9.5, Inside Out was 9.1, and Moana 2 was 9.0.
It’s early days, but at this pace, Zootopia 2 is poised to become the biggest studio movie in China of 2025 across just its first weekend.

Maoyan already is predicting an RMB 2.4B ($340M) full run on the Jared Bush- and Byron Howard-directed movie in the market; its predecessor did $236M at historic rates there.
While full Wednesday numbers will come later on Z2, we already know that Korea is estimated to have debuted Judy and Nick’s latest adventure at No. 1 with $1.7M. This is the second-highest studio opening day of 2025 (trailing only Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning), the fifth-highest opening day of the year overall and the top animated Hollywood opening day of 2025. Z2 also registered the second-biggest animated opening day of the year (behind Demon Slayer) and ranked second all-time among Disney animation titles (behind Frozen 2).
Like China, social scores are outstanding, with Naver at 9.33 and CGV at 98%, which is in line with the first Zootopia and well above Moana 2 and Inside Out 2.
In total, Z2 bows in 93% of the international box office landscape this weekend, notably beginning today with France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Netherlands and Philippines, alongside China and Korea.
Thursday adds Australia, Brazil and Mexico among majors, followed by the UK, India and Spain on Friday. The only market not going this session is Japan, which releases in December.
Heading into the weekend, the international box office projection for Z2 is in the $135M-$145M range.
As I noted earlier this week, the performance of Z2 in China will be keenly watched by the industry after quite a disappointing first 11 months in the market.
