    Hybrid

The hybrid version of Honda’s popular CR-V compact SUV adds power and improves fuel efficiency when compared to its gas-only sibling. Canadians obviously don’t mind spending the extra dollars for this hybrid version as it accounts for 70% of total CR-V sales.

    2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Competitors

The hybrid CR-V competes with the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, Kia Sportage Hybrid, and Mazda CX-50 Hybrid.

What’s new with the Honda CR-V Hybrid for 2026?

Honda adds a new Trailsport trim to its CR-V Hybrid lineup as part of the 2026 mid-cycle refresh. The 18-inch all-terrain tires are the only mechanical difference – most other changes are cosmetic, including an exclusive Ash Green Metallic paint option. An entry-level Sport trim is added to the CR-V Hybrid lineup. The hybrid also gets an enhanced traction management system. All 2026 Honda CR-Vs now include wireless charging along with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

    2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Performance

The CR-V Hybrid runs with a 2.0L gas motor paired with two electric motors which in combination make 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This runs through Honda’s e-CVT, and all Canadian CR-V Hybrids have AWD. This hybrid drivetrain is smooth and adequately powerful, if not exciting, and quiet in operation. The Honda’s chassis delivers a comfy ride along with competent handling.

    2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Efficiency

Natural Resources Canada rates the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid at 6.0 L/100 km city, 6.9 highway and 6.4 combined on the recommended regular grade fuel.

    2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Safety

All CR-V Hybrid trims are fitted with the full Honda Sensing package that bestows forward collision warning and mitigation, LED headlights with auto high beams, blind spot info, lane departure warning, low speed braking control, lane keep assist, cross traffic monitor, road departure mitigation, traffic sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and adaptive cruise with low-speed follow. Front wiper de-icer is also standard, although front/rear park sensors only arrive on top trim models.  The IIHS gave the Honda CR-V Hybrid a Top Safety Pick rating, although it scored a “poor” in the updated moderate overlap front collision test. The NHTSA gives the 2024 Honda CR-V its top 5 Star crash test rating.

    2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Reliability

The 2024 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study has Honda sitting at 206 Problems Per 100 Vehicles (PP100), slightly worse than the industry average of 190. That said, the CR-V has a strong reputation for reliability, as does the hybrid version. Consumer Reports predicts the 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid will be more reliable than the average new car.

    2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Interior

The CR-V Hybrid’s interior is functional, elegant, and built to a high standard. It also brags sensible ergonomics. HVAC functions are controlled by a trio of large rotary knobs, and the standard 9-inch central touchscreen boast a user-friendly interface and a volume knob. A 7-inch driver info display is standard on the Sport, with the three subsequent trims getting a 10.2-inch version.  Wireless capability for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with a phone charge pad are now standard for 2026. Sport and Trailsport variants have well-contoured fabric seats, while the EX-L and Touring get perforated leather.

    2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Dimensions

The CR-V is an impressive cargo hauler, although this hybrid version takes a bit of hit when compared to the gas version as it loses the handy-dandy bi-level floor. Pop the rear hatch and you’ll find 1,028 litres of storage behind the rear seats, expandable to 2,030 litres with the 60/40 split rear bench folded. That’s still more than many competitors. Towing capacity for the hybrid is 1,000 lbs, which is 500 lbs less than the gas models.

2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid Canadian Pricing

The 2026 Honda CR-V Hybrid is offered in four trim levels. The Sport starts at $49,032 (includes freight, PDI and fees). The new Trailsport asks $50,432 while the more comprehensively-equipped EX-L starts at $51,832. Topping the line is the Touring that, at $54,332 bestows 19-inch wheels, low-speed brake control, and 12-speaker Bose audio.

Palisade, Hyundai’s flagship SUV, has been a strong seller for the South Korean company since its North American introduction in 2019, remaining a popular choice for buyers looking for a spacious, three-row sport-ute with comfort, capability, and modern tech. The second-generation model has been completely redesigned for the 2026 model year. Five all-wheel-drive trims — Preferred Trend, XRT Pro, Luxury Hybrid, Ultimate Calligraphy and Ultimate Calligraphy Hybrid — will be sold in Canada.

    2026 Hyundai Palisade Competitors

The 2026 Hyundai Palisade primarily competes with other large, three-row family SUVs such as the Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, Toyota Grand Highlander and Volkswagen Atlas. Other rivals include the Chevrolet Traverse, Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-90 and Subaru Ascent.

What’s new with the Hyundai Palisade for 2026?

Everything. The 2026 Palisade is a new model with a redesigned exterior, updated interior and new technology, including a first-ever hybrid powertrain option. The updated vehicle features bolder styling, a more upright stance, and a new panoramic curved display for the driver. New available convenience technologies include first- and second-row Relaxation seating, and factory-installed tow hitch.

    2026 Hyundai Palisade Safety

Being a new model, the 2026 Palisade has yet to be crash-tested by either NHTSA or the IIHS in the United States. The previous model was an IIHS Top Pick for 2024. It also received an overall 5-star rating by NHTSA.

In addition to Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of active- and passive safety features, the 2026 Palisade protects families “in a myriad of unique ways,” even when parked, says Hyundai. In a first for the company, Palisade offers a new, built-in front and rear dashcam recorder that works with the vehicle’s exterior sensors to automatically record nearby movement in a variety of driving and parking situations, from panic stops to parking-lot bump and runs. Event data can be conveniently accessed via the audio screen or offboarded via the MicroSD card located in the glovebox.

Palisade also offers an available UV-C sanitizing tray within the centre console storage. An available full-display digital centre rear-view mirror uses a liftgate-mounted wide-angle camera to help the driver see behind the vehicle when the back window is obstructed by passengers or cargo.

A Rear Occupant Alert mounted beneath the headliner monitors the rear-seat area to detect the movements of children and pets, automatically reminding drivers to check the rear seats when exiting the vehicle. If the system detects movement in the rear seats after the driver leaves and locks the vehicle, it can sound the horn and send an alert to the driver’s smartphone via Bluelink.

    2026 Hyundai Palisade Reliability

As a new model for 2026, the second-generation Palisade has yet to generate reliability data. Consumer Reports gave the 2025 Palisade a “recommended” rating and an overall score of 83/100. Reliability was rated “better than average,” as was owner satisfaction.

    2026 Hyundai Palisade Interior

The 2026 Palisade’s redesigned cabin employs a horizontal dashboard layout with dual, 12.3-inch displays, plus soft-touch materials, “sophisticated” finishes and a “differentiated luxury ambience.” More specifically, the centre console is shaped to enhance seat roominess. The console and armrest have been designed for comfort as well as enhancing ergonomic stability when reaching for vehicle controls, says Hyundai. The SUV offers a double-door centre stack with an open tray in the lower part of the console coupled with conveniently placed physical switchgear. A wireless charging pad is located in the console with an integrated device-cooling fan. It provides 15 watts for fast device charging. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration is standard. Available is a Bose 14-speaker surround audio system. In addition, a standard panoramic, curved digital instrument cluster and navigation system provides key information in easy view of the driver.

Relaxation seats for front- and second-row passengers are available, providing additional degrees of recline and deployable upper-leg supports to help reduce fatigue during extended drives. Eight-passenger seating is standard. Available captain’s chairs include one-touch, second-row tilt-and-slide functionality, facilitating easier third-row access. The third-row seats are available with power-folding, sliding and power-reclining mechanisms, along with heating. Second-row power-adjustable seats offer heating and ventilation. Cup holders and 100-watt capable USB-C ports are accessible in each row.

    Hybrid

The Kia Sportage is the automaker’s best-selling vehicle and it receives several enhancements for 2026. This compact five-seater SUV is available three ways: in gasoline-only; as a hybrid; and as a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).

    2026 Kia Sportage Competitors

Canadian consumers love the compact SUV segment, and the Sportage faces numerous rivals including the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander PHEV, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, and more.

What’s new with the Kia Sportage for 2026?

The hybrid and PHEV powertrains all get a slight boost in horsepower. Front and rear styling is refreshed; wireless phone connectivity is standard; and new available features include a head-up display and digital key. Models with all-wheel drive (AWD) get a new selectable Terrain Mode for snow, mud, and sand.

    2025 Kia Sportage Performance

The gas-only Sportage uses a 2.5L four-cylinder engine that makes 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base LX trim starts in front-wheel drive (FWD) but can be optioned to AWD, which is standard on all other trims.

The hybrid uses a turbocharged 1.6L four-cylinder that makes 177 horsepower and 195 lb-ft on its own, but working in conjunction with the hybrid system, that rises to 241 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The PHEV uses the same engine but its combined output is 261 horsepower plus 258 lb-ft of torque. Both the hybrid and PHEV use a six-speed automatic transmission and are AWD.

    2026 Kia Sportage Efficiency

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) hadn’t yet rated the 2026 Sportage at time of writing; but the 2025 Sportage in FWD is rated at 9.3 L/100 km city, 7.1 highway, and 8.3 combined; and in AWD it’s 10.1 city, 8.7 highway, and 9.4 combined.

The Sportage Hybrid for 2025 is rated at 6.1 city, 6.3 highway, and 6.2 combined. The PHEV is 6.6 city, 6.7 highway, and 6.7 combined; but after it’s been plugged in and charged, it’s rated for 55 kilometres on electricity alone. Once that depletes, the system reverts to conventional self-charging hybrid operation, switching between gasoline, electricity, or a combination; and it will continue to drive for as long as there’s fuel in the tank.

    2026 Kia Sportage Safety

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) hasn’t yet rated the 2026 Sportage, but it gave its top five-star rating to the 2025 version. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2025 version its top “Good” in its small overlap front and side crash tests, but hadn’t yet subjected it to the updated moderate front overlap, which now assesses potential injury to a rear-seat passenger as well as to those in front. It received the next-step-down “Acceptable” for its front pedestrian detection in automatic emergency braking, but “Marginal” for vehicle-to-vehicle detection.

Standard driver-assist features include emergency front braking, lane-keep assist, trailer stability assist, front and rear park distance warning, rear occupant alert, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and mandatory rearview camera. Upper trims can add blind-view monitor, highway driving assist, rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, and surround-view monitor.

    2026 Kia Sportage Reliability

Consumer Reports gave the 2025 Kia Sportage a predicted reliability rating of 67/100, saying it expects it to have “above average reliability when compared to the average new car,” based on data from the 2023 and 2024 models. It didn’t win an individual award in the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which looks at three-year-old vehicles, but Kia as an automaker ranked 11th among all automakers, two steps above the industry average.

    2026 Kia Sportage Interior

The gas-only LX entry trim includes a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, keyless entry, heated cloth seats, 60/40 split-folding rear seats, and pushbutton start. The X-Line adds faux leather upholstery, power driver’s seat, heated steering wheel, wireless charger, and remote starter. The EX, the next step up from that, is also the entry level on the hybrid and PHEV, and it adds navigation, satellite radio, auto-dimming mirror, dual-zone climate control, and automatic defogger. From there, higher trims can add power passenger seat, driver’s side memory, air-cooled seats, heated rear seats, head-up display, premium audio, and 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

    2026 Kia Sportage Dimensions

The 2026 Kia Sportage has an overall length of 4,660 mm (183.5 inches). Legroom is good at 1,052 mm (41.4 inches) in front and a generous 1,050 mm (41.3 inches) in the second row. Depending on how you set the cargo floor height in the gas-only Sportage, you get up to 1,121 litres of cargo space, opening up to a potential 2,098 litres when the second row is tucked down. Battery placement in the electrified models cuts a bit into cargo space. The gas Sportage can tow up to 2,500 lbs when properly equipped, and up to 2,000 lbs for the Hybrid and PHEV.

    2026 Kia Sportage Canadian Pricing

The gas-only 2026 Sportage has the bulk of the available trim levels, starting with the LX FWD at $31,995, and the LX AWD at $33,995. From there, it goes through the X-Line at $37,745; the EX at $39,745; the EX Premium at $41,745; and the X-Line Limited at $45,245. Other than that entry LX FWD, all come with AWD.

The Sportage Hybrid starts with the EX at $41,25; then the EX Premium at $44,245; and the SX at $47,745. The Sportage PHEV comes as the EX at $46,245; the EX Premium at $49,245; and the SX at $52,745.

It is crucial for any luxury vehicle brand to have a dog in the lavish two-row crossover arena. This XC60 is Volvo’s entrant in that field. Despite foreign ownership, the model continues to be lined with the type of Swedish minimalism one has come to expect from this brand, along with all manner of safety gear on which Volvo has built a reputation.

    2026 Volvo XC60 Competitors

There is no shortage of competition in this segment, including rigs like the BMW X5, Audi Q5, and the Lexus RX (which arguably invented the segment when it appeared about 25 years ago, by the way. Elsewhere, we find a Lincoln Nautilus, Mercedes GLE, and Genesis GV70. Told ya it was crowded.

What’s new with the Volvo XC60 for 2026?

For the 2026 model year, Volvo Cars’ global top-selling XC60 receives a refresh. Its infotainment gear gets new computer hardware to improve response times and hasten system responses. Its screen increases in size to 11.2 inches while also enjoying a higher density of pixels and a new user experience which simplifies some commands. The cabin gets new cupholders and an improved wireless phone charger along with fresh trim choices. Outside, look for the new take on the Volvo grille, as first showed up on the larger XC90.

    2026 Volvo XC60 Performance

This model comes with a mild hybrid powertrain, known in Volvo circles as the ‘B5’ engine. There is a plug-in hybrid confusingly marketed under the a slightly different banner with a so-called ‘T8’ powertrain. The B5 is a four-cylinder engine making 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of twist which should haul this thing to 100 km/h in about seven seconds. Towing capacity taps out at 2,400 kilograms. As for the T8 plug-in hybrid, that one makes 455hp and 523 lb-ft, dropping acceleration to 4.8 seconds and towing to 1,580 kilos.

    2026 Volvo XC60 Efficiency

The feds estimate the 2025 XC60 B5 should get approximately 10.0 L/100 km economy in town but a decently impressive 7.8 when cruising on the open highway. This means a score of 9.0 L/100 km for its combined rating. It has a fuel tank measuring 71 litres. The plug-in can travel about 58 clicks on electricity when conditions are right, working out to approximately 8.5 litres per 100 km across the board when used in conjunction with the gasoline-powered engine. Its 18.8 kWh battery takes about 5 hours to charge.

    2026 Volvo XC60 Safety

Given the brand’s legendary rep for fastidious safety, it should be no surprise the XC60 earned a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS when it underwent a battery of tests in 2023. The most recent data from the crash test dummies have upheld this achievement. In fact, this model managed to earn top marks even in face of the updated moderate overlap front test, an exam which flummoxed many.

    2026 Volvo XC60 Reliability

Touchscreens controls deemed by Consumer Reports to be “unintuitive and distracting” partially contributed to a 33-of-100 score for predicted reliability since the methodology penalizes confusing controls even if they are working just as designed. Still, the estimate is based on information going back to the 2021 model year, plus overall Volvo brand scores. This also led to a 2-of-5 score for predicted owner satisfaction.

    2026 Volvo XC60 Interior

As mentioned for other models from this brand, and will continue to be mentioned so long as we have breath in our bodies or Volvo changes up its design house, the XC60’s cabin hews to traditional Swedish minimalism. A large tablet through which just about all functions are funneled dominates the centre stack, with only the barest skiff of redundant buttons – the ones mandated by federal law, probably – appearing just south of this large screen. Top dog trims get a Harman Kardon premium sound system plus a head-up display and four-zone climate control to quell warring factions in the back seat.

    2026 Volvo XC60 Dimensions

Total length of this crossover is 4,708 millimetres on a 2,865 mm wheelbase. Width with its mirrors folded is one whole millimetre less than exactly two metres. Height, including the shark fin antenna, is 1,655 mm. Ground clearance checks in at 209 millimetres (8.2 inches).

    2026 Volvo XC60 Canadian Pricing

Volvo sets an MSRP for the B5 of $59,054 for the entry-level (but certainly not base) Core trim, which is $600 more than last year. The Plus trim with gear like a banging audio system commands $65,542. While a tony Ultimate trim adds jacks the price to $71,692. Finally, a dipped-in-ink Black Edition layers a further $1,200 onto the Ultimate. The T8 plug-in adds to the tally: $63,542 Core, $80,242 Plus, $86,342 Ultra.

BMW was one of the first luxury manufacturers into the crossover segment when it launched the X5 in 1999. Since then, it has gone through four generations, each being better than the previous. Today, it remains one of the top contenders in the segment with three models that range from frugal to powerful.

    2026 BMW X5 Competitors

The X5’s key rivals are the Audi Q7, Genesis GV80, Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Porsche Cayenne and Volvo XC90. The outliers are the Cadillac XT5 and Lincoln Aviator.

What’s new with the BMW X5 for 2026?

Heading into 2026, the fourth-generation X5 does not have any significant changes — there is a replacement on the horizon.

    2026 BMW X5 Performance

The X5 arrives with three engine choices. It starts with the X5 xDrive40i with a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six that twists out 375 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. It runs to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds. Up next is the X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. It blends the 3.0L turbo-six with an electric motor to deliver a net system output of 483 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. The 19.2-kWh battery takes two hours to charge and delivers 64-km of electric-only driving.  At the top sits the X5 M60i xDrive. The 4.4L twin-turbo V8 cranks out 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, which is enough to propel the riders to 100k in 4.3 seconds.

All models use an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive. It monitors a number of sensors to detect wheelspin and an electronically-controlled clutch to send the drive power to the wheels with the best grip. In operation it can send the majority of the drive to either axle to maintain traction and stability.

    2026 BMW X5 Efficiency

The X5 xDrive40i is rated at 10.1 L/100 km in the city, 8.7 L/100 km on the highway and it has a combined average consumption of 9.4 L/100 km. The annual fuel cost is $3,290. The X5 M60i xDrive is rated at 13.8 L/100 km, 10.5 L/100 km and 12.3 L/100 km, respectively. The annual fuel cost is $4,305. The fuel miser is the X5 xDrive50e plug-in hybrid. It has an average equivalent consumption of 3.9 Le/100 km and a fuel/charge cost of $2,051.

    2026 BMW X5 Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gives the 2025 X5 its best Top Safety Pick+. It has Good scores in the small front overlap, as well Good scores in moderate front overlap and side impact updated tests. Headlight performance is rated as Acceptable and it has a Good for front crash prevention. The X5 plug-in hybrid is only rated for headlight performance (Acceptable) and front crash prevention (Good). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the 2025 X5 four stars out of five.

    2026 BMW X5 Reliability

Consumer Reports gave the 2025 X5 a predicted reliability score of 61 out of 100 saying, “We expect the 2025 X5 will be more reliable than the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2022, 2023, and 2024 models.” However, the X5 plug-in hybrid received a predicted reliability score of 45 out of 100.

    2026 BMW X5 Interior

The highlights of the well-conceived cabin are the quality of the materials and BMW’s curved display. The latter over half of the dashboard and blends a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation cluster with a larger 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen that runs on the company’s latest OS 8.5. Both sit under a single piece of glass. The infotainment side of iDrive gives access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation and vehicle settings.
