The Ford F-150 can be just about anything to anyone. It ranges from the regular cab long-box workhorse to the radical Raptor. This makes the Ford F-150’s ordering guide, arguably, the largest book in the work. The possible permutations run into the multiple millions (or more!) when you factor in the eight basic models, three cabs, three box lengths, five wheelbases, six engines, two- and four-wheel-drive plus things like axle ratios and paint colours! It takes an expert to build the right truck for a specific need — thankfully, for most, it’s a matter of picking the model, cab and box length.
The F-150 really only has two key rivals — the Ram along with the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra twins. Other so-called trucks just don’t measure up.
After a significant rework for 2024, which included updated styling, a new 12-inch infotainment touchscreen and digital instrumentation, the fourteenth-generation Ford F-150 carries over into 2025.
The engine lineup starts with the 2.7L EcoBoost V6 with 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque and moves through the 5.0L V8 with 400 hp/410 lb-ft, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with 400 hp/500 lb-ft, and onto the 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid with 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. All engines work with a 10-speed automatic transmission to drive the rear or all four wheels. The 4x4 systems have a two-speed transfer case and fall into two basic categories. It is rated at 22.8 L/100 km city, 15.9 L/100 km highway and has an average of 19.7 L/100 km. An annual fuel cost of $5,713 means digging deep!
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2024 F-150 SuperCab and SuperCrew Good scores for small front overlap, moderate front overlap original test and the updated side impact test. However, the SuperCrew had a Poor rating for the updated moderate front overlap test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) gave all F-150 models a Five Star rating.
Consumer Reports gave the 2024 F-150 a score of 35 out of 100, saying, “We expect the 2024 F-150 will be less reliable than the average new car. This prediction is based on data from 2021, 2022 and 2023 models.” The 2024 PowerBoost hybrid had a score of 19 out of 100 meaning it will be “much less reliable than the average new car.”
The sheer choice makes itemizing the interiors too long to go into detail here — for example the base truck comes with vinyl flooring and it goes up from there. Fortunately, the layout is intuitive, so you find whatever you're reaching for easily. The standard 12-inch infotainment touchscreen is clean, uncluttered and easy to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard and there’s the optional Ford BlueCruise — it delivers hands-free highway driving.
There are Regular, SuperCab and SuperCrew cabs, as well as 5-foot-5, 6-foot-5 and eight-foot boxes, so the models ride on five different wheelbases based on the pairing. As for space, the Regular cab is for two adults, as the 40/20/40 seat means adding a third rider is an overly friendly affair. The SuperCab offers seating for six. Again, three in the front is an optimistic proposition; five doable. Ditto the SuperCrew, although the rear seat riders do get much better leg space. It jumps from 851-mm for the SuperCab to 1,108-mm for the ’Crew.
The base XL starts at $49,955, the STX at $58,260, the XLT at $59,395, the Tremor $75,980, the Lariat at $80,495, the King Ranch at $94,940 and the Platinum at $103,740. The top Raptor commands $106,975. Destination is $2,395 in all cases.
