Like it or not, this four-door SUV – with an all-electric powertrain – is indeed marketed as a Mustang. The roots of this decision are murky but you can be sure it originated in a stuffy windowless conference deep inside the Glass House in Dearborn. Fortunately, aside from its name, this is a very good EV.
Challengers for this EV will be found in the Tesla Model Y, new Jeep Wagoneer S, and Nissan Ariya. The difficult-to-love Chevy Blazer EV is also in the two-row mix. Base models of the Genesis Electrified GV70 are similar in price to the Mach-E GT and Rally, if vastly different in mission and feel.
This model year brings a trio of notable additions. Most importantly, a heat pump has been added to help optimize energy consumption, especially in cold climates. There is a new Sport Appearance package which brings GT flair to more pedestrian trims. Finally, the BlueCruise system has been updated to better handle automated lane changes.
Standard Range Mustang Mach-E with rear-wheel drive make 264 horsepower and can go from 0 – 100 km/h in about 5.6 seconds. Adding all-wheel drive increases that to 325 hp and shaves a second off the acceleration time. Extended Range cars make 290 and 365 horses in RWD and AWD, respectively. Both the mighty GT and off-road Rally are good for 480 horsepower and can easily hit highway speed in about 3.5 seconds.
Two battery sizes are available, depending on option packages selected. NRCan figures suggest the 72-kWh unit can provide about 400 kilometres on a single charge when shod with rear-wheel drive or 370 clicks with four-wheel drive is present. Extended range 91-kWh batteries bump that to 515 km and 483 km, respectively. Elsewhere the GT can muster 451 km while the Rally can do about 426 clicks.
Available gear includes Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology 2.0 with various assists like lane keeping, pre-collision helpers, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability. Don’t forget that some of these features require a paid subscription to a connected service plan, so make sure it is included for at least the first three years of ownership after initial purchase if you desire these features.
Predicted reliability of this model ranks a 3-of-5 score with the nerds at Consumer Reports, along with a 4-of-5 estimate for owner satisfaction. Praise was heaped at the Mach-E’s cargo space and available all-wheel drive, though raspberries were given for its fussy door handles and propensity to flummox users with that 15.5-inch screen.
Every trim gets the 15.5-inch portrait-style infotainment touchscreen, a unit whose embedded physical dial can now control ventilation commands instead of being restricted to audio volume. A thin 10.2-inch strip of digital real estate sits ahead of the steering wheel, acting as a quasi-HUD display. Options further up the chain include banging stereo systems, power liftgate controls, and a smattering of aluminum trim on the instrument panel.
Total length of this car is 185.6 inches, though minor fascia changes on the GT and Rally make them a few tenths longer. Overall width is 74.1 inches across the board. Height is 64.0 inches except for the GT which is half an inch shorter and the Rally which is an inch taller. Curb weight spans the gamut from about 4,500 pounds to nearly 5,000 pounds for a loaded Rally.
As of this writing, Ford has promised a $2,000 price cut on Mach-E, meaning the 2025 version will start at $52,995 in Canada before delivery charges and dealer fees. That also doesn’t include the subtraction of applicable provincial or federal EV rebates. The mid-rung Premium is about a $4,000 walk from there. The GT is pushing $70k and the Rally is a couple of grand above that mark.
