The Toyota RAV4 is a compact five-seater SUV that also happens to be the automaker’s top-selling vehicle in Canada. It moves into 2025 with no changes. It’s also sold as the RAV4 Hybrid and as the RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid.
The compact SUV market is a very popular one and so the RAV4 has a lot of rivals, including the Ford Bronco Sport and Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Mazda CX-50, Mitsubishi RVR, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

The 2025 Toyota RAV4 uses a 2.5L four-cylinder engine, making 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, and with an eight-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive (AWD) is standard on all trims, primarily driving the front wheels but able to send up to 50% of power to the rear tires as needed. The Trail trim, designed with mild off-road ability in mind, has a torque-vectoring rear differential that can determine if a rear wheel has lost power, and ensures the other one has the power to get everything moving.
In a review of the 2025 Toyota RAV4, David Booth said, “Before getting into details, let’s understand Toyota 2.5-litre fours are not the most sophisticated of engines. Frugal, responsive in their own way, and, of course, unfailingly reliable, these are not musical motors... All three versions of RAV4 may be reasonably powerful, but the engines are coarse any time you floor the throttle. That said, they are all surprisingly willing performers.”
Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) rates the entry RAV4 LE trim at 8.7 L/100 km city, 6.9 highway, and 7.9 combined, for an estimated annual fuel cost of $2,449. Other trims presumably being heavier, they’re rated at 9.5 city, 7.2 highway, and 8.5 combined and with an estimated cost of $2,635. All take regular-grade, 87-octane gasoline.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the 2025 Toyota RAV4 its highest five-star crash-test rating. At the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2025 version rated the top “Good” in the small front overlap test, and the original versions of the moderate front overlap and side crash test. However, both tests have been updated. In the new moderate overlap, which now assesses potential injury to a rear passenger as well as to those in front, it earned “Marginal,” and in the updated side test, which better simulates being struck by a large SUV, it was “Acceptable.”
Standard driver-assist safety features on all trims include full-speed adaptive cruise control, emergency braking that identifies pedestrians, cyclists, and oncoming vehicles, lane-tracing assist, automatic high-beam headlamps, lane-keep assist, driver’s knee airbag, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the mandatory rearview camera. The top Limited trim further adds emergency rear braking and a panoramic camera.
Consumer Reports gives the 2025 RAV4 a “Recommended” rating and a predicted reliability score of 86/100, saying it expects it to be “much more reliable than the average new car,” based on the 2022 through 2024 models. In the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which looks at three-year-old vehicles, the RAV4 earned the top rating in the compact SUV segment, ahead of the GMC Terrain and Mazda CX-5; while Toyota as a brand ranked fourth among all automakers.
Features on the entry LE model include an eight-inch centre touchscreen with wireless connectivity, heated front seats, cloth upholstery, five USB charging ports, and seven-inch digital instrument cluster. The XLE adds a sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, pushbutton start, power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, and a heated steering wheel. Upper trims can then add faux-leather upholstery, cargo net, wireless charger, 10.5-inch centre screen, 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, premium audio, digital rearview mirror, heated and ventilated front seats, and heated rear seats.
The 2025 Toyota RAV4 has an overall length of 4,596 mm (180.9 inches). Front-row headroom is 991 mm (39.0 in) on the base LE trim, and 958 mm (37.7 in) on other trims with a sunroof; rear-seat skull space is 1,003 mm (39.5 in). Legroom is 1,041 mm (41.0 in) in front, and 960 mm (37.8 in) for the back seat. Cargo capacity is 1,061 litres (37.5 cubic feet) with the rear seats upright, and 1,976 litres (69.8 cu.ft.) when they’re folded down. Towing capacity is 1,500 lbs for all trims but the Trail, which can pull up to 3,500 lbs.
The RAV4 starts in LE trim at $33,555. From there, the XLE is $37,295; the XLE Premium is $39,337; the Trail is $40,985; and the Limited tops it out at $45,175.
