Global Data Usage Accelerating Unprecedently

Increased data usage on smartphones, wearables and other connected devices is driving demand for more spectrum and more frequency bands. More bands mean more fixed frequency filters in mobile radio front ends. This is causing size, space and design complexity issues.

Fixed frequency filters are fundamental to the operation of all FDD wireless devices in use today. They ensure that their built-in transmitters and receivers can simultaneously send and receive signals whilst preventing self-interference from compromising signal strength. As new frequency bands are introduced, the component count per device increases in line. This is untenable long-term.

Pioneering Technology That Overcomes RF Interference Challenges

Forefront RF is poised to redefine mobile radio front end designs. Based on our patented Foretune technology, we’ve developed a full RFFE module that incorporates a power amplifier, low noise amplifier, bidirectional coupler and a tunable duplexer that dynamically self-configures according to available frequencies and/or services needed. The result:

An RFFE module that enables significant size reductions in mobile radio front-ends in a compact form-factor that is  optimised for high volume manufacturing. 

How it Works

Instead of using an array of fixed frequency filters, FortuneTM technology applies a single pair of tunable filters and resolves RF interference and challenges by leveraging self-interference cancellation techniques.  Similar to noise cancelling technology in headphones, Foretune™ dynamically cancels all unwanted RF signals by adding inverted versions of those signals. Aimed at 4G and 5G user equipment, Foretune™ technology is set to replace multiple components found in traditional radio front-end modules with a smaller integrated solution capable of supporting more bands. The higher the band count, the greater the space saving.
