Removing publications page (Jekyll-scholar)

As stated in customize.md, to remove publications page we should also remove jekyll-scholar from the Gemfile. When I push the change, I get this error in deploy:

Some dependencies were deleted from your gemfile, but the lockfile can't be
updated because frozen mode is set

You have deleted from the Gemfile:
* jekyll-scholar

Run `bundle install` elsewhere and add the updated Gemfile.lock to version
control.

My understanding is that users shouldn't be changing the Gemfile.lock file. How do we get around this? Thanks!

Not directly. You should remove from the Gemfile and, when building, it will update the Gemfile.lock. Also, have you remove it from you _config.yml?
