Great suggestion—this would definitely make navigating wider Kanban boards much smoother, especially for mouse users. The current reliance on the thin, sometimes-hidden horizontal scrollbar does add friction, and your idea for click-and-drag scrolling from empty column space would be a big usability improvement. In the meantime, here are a couple of workarounds that might help:
I’d encourage you to upvote similar feedback and keep sharing these ideas—usability improvements like this benefit a lot of users. Hopefully, GitHub considers adding this intuitive drag-to-scroll feature in a future update! |

Body
When looking at a Kanban of a Github Project, some columns may be horizontally out of view. I need to go pick the thin bottom scrollbar to slide it sideways and see other columns.
This is really slow and feels like friction. My Kanban has 6 columns and I always have either to leftmost one out of view, or the right-most one... it's annoying.
If I'm using a touchpad, it's easy to scroll horizontally with a two-finger drag. But when using the mouse, having to use the scroll bar is a nuisance.
Suggestion: allow dragging sideways, starting from empty column space
So, if I point my mouse to any empty space in a Kanban column (the beginning of the red arrow in my image) and drag sideways, the columns scroll horizontally.
This is a natural movement, very intuitive, and it's much easier to start the movement without having to carefully find the thin bottom scrollbar. Which, to make things worse, is a disappearing-when-not-use- scrollbar (worst thing ever invented in terms of UI, but I digress).
