Unable to Sign Up for GitHub Copilot Despite Eligibility

Hi everyone,

I received the message: “🎉 Congratulations! You are eligible to use GitHub Copilot for free.”
But as soon as I clicked the “Get access to GitHub Copilot” button, I got an error toast saying:
“Your account is unable to sign up for Copilot. Please contact Support.”

I need this urgently. Please help me.

Once benefits become available, you can claim your Copilot PRO offer on this signup link.

To redeem others benefits, go to the pack offers page, scroll down to the "All offers" section and select any offer that suits you.

In case you encounter a problem claiming any offer, I recommend you raise a ticket here, select "I am a verified student having trouble redeeming my Global Campus offers" and explain your issue.

That is definitely frustrating, especially after seeing the "Congratulations" message! This is actually a known hiccup that happens frequently with the Student Developer Pack.

The error "Your account is unable to sign up for Copilot" usually happens for one of two reasons:

1. Propagation Delay: Even though you got the "eligible" notification, the permission hasn't fully synced to the billing system yet (this can take up to 24–72 hours).
2. Account Flag: Occasionally, GitHub's automated security systems flag an account for manual review.

Here are a few workarounds that have worked for others:

1. Try the Direct Signup Link

Sometimes the main button is buggy. Try going directly to this URL while logged in:

2. Check the "Explore More Offers" Page

1. Go to your GitHub Education Pack page.
2. Look for the "Explore more offers" button.
3. Find the specific "GitHub Copilot" card there and click the link from that card instead of the main banner.

3. The "Wait and See" (Syncing)

If you were just verified as a student today, wait a few hours (or up to 24 hours), then log out and log back in. The system might just need time to catch up.

4. Contacting Support (The Right Way)

If none of the above works, you must contact support as the error says. To get a faster response:

1. Go to the GitHub Support for Education.
2. Select "I am a verified student and I'm having trouble redeeming my Global Campus offers."
3. Attach that screenshot you showed us.

It usually means GitHub’s system marked the account as eligible, but when you click the button, their billing/verification backend still thinks something is missing or not fully synced, so the page blocks you with that “unable to sign up” message. The quickest fixes are to log out and back in, try from a different browser, or wait a few hours for the eligibility status to refresh but if it still shows that same banner, the only real solution is to contact GitHub Support because the error is on their side, not yours, and they have to manually unblock your account.
