Ubuntu Troubleshooting

Extension shows "Backend error"

The extension can't communicate with the backend service.

# 1. Is the service running?
systemctl --user status agent-bar.service

# 2. Does the socket exist?
ls /run/user/1000/agent-bar/service.sock

# 3. If socket is missing, restart the service
systemctl --user restart agent-bar.service

# 4. Test the snapshot
time agent-bar service snapshot --json
# Should be < 1 second (cached), not 22 seconds (timeout/fallback)

# 5. If the service keeps crashing, check logs
journalctl --user -u agent-bar.service --no-pager | tail -20

Common causes:

  • Socket file was cleaned by tmpfiles. Fix: pnpm install:ubuntu (reinstalls tmpfiles protection).
  • Service binary is outdated. Fix: pnpm install:ubuntu (rebuilds and restarts).
  • Module not found errors. Fix: pnpm install && pnpm install:ubuntu.

Extension shows provider errors

The backend is reachable but individual providers are failing.

claude_cli_removed Config usa sourceMode: "cli" (PTY removido) Mude para "auto" ou "api" no config
codex_cli_deprecated Config usa sourceMode: "cli" (PTY depreciado) Mude para "auto" no config
claude_cli_missing Credenciais OAuth ausentes Rode qualquer comando claude para gerar ~/.claude/.credentials.json
claude_auth_expired Token OAuth expirou Rode qualquer comando claude para renovar
codex_cli_failed Codex app-server falhou Verifique codex --version, rode codex login
secret-tool missing libsecret-tools not installed sudo apt install libsecret-tools

Erros de sourceMode antigo

Se voce atualizou o Agent Bar mas o config local (~/.config/agent-bar/config.json) ainda tem sourceMode: "cli" para Codex ou Claude, os providers vao falhar com erros claude_cli_removed ou codex_cli_deprecated.

# Corrija deletando o config (usa os novos defaults)
rm ~/.config/agent-bar/config.json
systemctl --user restart agent-bar.service

# Ou edite manualmente: mude "cli" para "auto"
nano ~/.config/agent-bar/config.json
systemctl --user restart agent-bar.service

No v2.0, os defaults esperados sao:

  • codex.sourceMode = "auto"
  • claude.sourceMode = "auto" ou "api"

Se quiser voltar rapidamente para os defaults atuais, apagar ~/.config/agent-bar/config.json continua sendo o caminho mais simples.

Extension doesn't appear in topbar

Service won't start

# Common: "Cannot find module" or "ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND"
# Fix: rebuild
pnpm install && pnpm install:ubuntu

agent-bar: command not found

# Check if wrapper exists
ls -la ~/.local/bin/agent-bar

# Check if ~/.local/bin is in PATH
echo $PATH | tr ':' '\n' | grep local/bin

# If missing from PATH, add to ~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc:
export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

# Reinstall
pnpm install:ubuntu

Copilot auth still asks for old setup

If you are following an older note or shell history entry that still uses:

agent-bar auth copilot --client-id <...>

update to:

agent-bar auth copilot

The current v2.0 build already ships with a default GitHub OAuth client ID for Device Flow. Keep --client-id only if you intentionally need to override it.

Socket keeps disappearing

# Check tmpfiles protection

# Should show: d %t/agent-bar 0775 - - -

# If missing
pnpm install:ubuntu

Snapshot takes 20+ seconds

O servico socket nao esta respondendo, e o CLI esta fazendo fallback direto para os providers.

Causas comuns:

  • Config com sourceMode: "cli": Os fetchers PTY antigos travam por 12-20s antes de dar timeout. Mude para "auto".
  • Socket ausente: O servico precisa ser reiniciado.

# Se codex ou claude tem "cli", mude para "auto"

# 2. Restart the service to recreate the socket
systemctl --user restart agent-bar.service

# 3. Verify socket exists
ls /run/user/1000/agent-bar/service.sock

# 4. Test speed (should be < 1 second)
time agent-bar service snapshot --json

Refresh button doesn't work

The extension's polling service might have a stale state. Try:

  1. Logout/login (full GNOME Shell restart)
  2. If still broken: systemctl --user restart agent-bar.service, then logout/login
