Review patterns and recommendations

Adaptive Logs provides you with a list of patterns and recommendations on which logs to drop based on usage patterns. You can filter, review, and edit drop rates to suit your needs.

After reviewing, you apply the drop rates to implement the changes. The logs are then dropped upon ingestion into Grafana Cloud, reducing unnecessary log storage costs while ensuring that your observability remains intact.

The following topics provide you with guidance on how to manage your recommendations.

View early detection patterns

Log lines with little business value are often introduced into production, leading to unnecessary ingestion costs and noise. By filtering for early detection patterns, you can identify and remove ingest spikes quickly; only ingesting the most valuable telemetry.

To view early detection patterns, use the Show early detection patterns toggle. The toggle also shows you the number of early patterns available.

Review recommendations

To review patterns and recommendations for drop rates for each pattern, navigate to Administration > Cost Management > Logs Cost Management > Adaptive Logs.

On the Patterns tab, you can:

• Filter patterns by service and frequency, making it easier to decide which log lines to drop.
• If you have already applied one or more recommendations, the Adaptive Logs screen shows the drop rate currently being applied to each recommendation.
• For each pattern, you can view the query frequency, volume, drop rate, recommended, and projected savings.
• The Recommended column shows the recommended percentage of log lines to drop.
• The Current(%) column shows the percentage of lines currently being dropped, or planned to be dropped if changes have not yet been applied. For more information, see ** Fundamentals.
• Expand a pattern to view a pattern breakdown per service, including service name, percentage, savings, and volume.
• To see log lines that match the label selectors and pattern, click the Open in Explore icon for each pattern.

Apply all recommendations

Applying all recommendations is the most effective and efficient way to optimize your log management. As well as saving time and effort compared to manually reviewing and applying each recommendation individually, it also gives you immediate realization of cost savings.

To apply all recommendations, complete the following steps.

1. Click Apply all recommendations from the Adaptive Logs user interface.

2. Review the recommended drop rates

   The Apply recommended drop rate(s) dialog box provides information as to ingest volume vs projected volume and the projected savings of applying the recommendation(s).

3. Click Apply to confirm.

Modify recommendations

To modify single recommendations, complete the following steps.

1. In the Actions column, click the edit icon.

2. Enter a drop rate for the pattern.

   Valid values for the percentage of logs to be dropped are between 0 and 100. If you need a more granular drop rate configuration, refer to Per-service drop rate overrides.

   The projected savings of making this change are displayed.

3. Click Lock this pattern drop rate if you want to prevent edits from being applied to this pattern, including bulk edits.

4. View which pattern drop rates are locked on the Configuration tab.

   Click Lock to display recommendations that have a locked drop rate.

5. Click Apply.
