Publishing options

Open access and subscription publishing

All submissions to Springer journals are subject to high-quality peer review, editorial, and production processes. Springer journals offer two publishing models which you can choose from, depending on the journal you submit to:

  • Open access: Publishing open access makes your work immediately and permanently available online for everyone, worldwide. The final published version is free to read for everyone. Publishing open access increases visibility, reach, and usage of your work, supporting career progression.
  • Subscription publishing: Your published work is available to institutions and individuals who subscribe to the journal or who pay to read specific content.

Springer journal types

There are two main types of Springer journals:

  • Open access journals only publish open access content.
  • Hybrid journals publish both open access and subscription content. You can choose whether to publish open access or subscription once your work is accepted for publication.

We also have a small number of subscription-only journals published on behalf of our society partners, which publish content that is only available to subscribers.

You can find the journal type clearly labelled on each journal’s homepage, just below the title.

Open access fees and funding

When you choose to publish your work open access, in a hybrid or open access journal, an article processing charge (APC) usually applies. The article processing charge accounts for the range of publishing services we provide, from production and distribution to integrity and accessibility. This fee is set by the journal and is often covered by funders and institutions directly.

Many researchers benefit from open access agreements between their institution and Springer Nature. These may provide:

  • Full APC coverage - 100% of the APC is paid by the institution
  • A percentage discount - for example, 10% off the list price APC
  • Fixed price coverage - for example, up to €1,000 paid by the institution

You can find out if your institution has an agreement that can cover the article processing charge. Visit any journal’s ‘Fees and funding’ page and select your institution.
