This 3 part series of posts is possibly the best writeup I have seen of an org optimizing their AWS costs. There are a lot of great tips not only of what to do, but how to do it. Their approach hit all the big cost saving tactics: - Set cost cloud targets (COGS and an internal unit metric are good first targets) - Tag all the things! - All data in S3 should be compressed and in a lifecycled / Intelligently Tiered bucket - NAT Gateway and cross-AZ data transfer will unexpectedly ruin your budget - If possible, all compute should be on Graviton - Understand your savings plans - Engineering should be responsible for cloud cost, not Finance - Include cloud cost in design reviews Also includes a really good tip: remove IAM permissions from things before deleting them! #aws #finops #costoptimization

Along with general engineering and architecture efforts, I've spent the past 12 years helping orgs move from a dev-ops team to a dev-ops mentality. One thing I've refined and learned from+with others along the way is the concept of a "Dev Ops Contract". I've always wanted to use rust and also interact with the Kubernetes API. Historically, I've stuck to using go as the libraries there are by far the most mature. As part of building kty, I figured that I'd give it a try and the experience was delightful. Everything I needed was there and the API from kube-rs is just right. If you're considering automating something with Kubernetes, you should consider doing it in rust! Take a look at my post if you're interested in more details.
