I’ve been an SDE-2 at Google for 1 year now. From doing BCA in a Tier-3 college without any support or coding culture to cracking Amazon (30 LPA+) just 2 years later on his own...Vaibhav's story will teach you a lot. In 2020: Vaibhav Dangayach graduated from his BCA from a Tier-3 college, decided not to pursue MCA, and went on to build his skills. Just 2 years later, in 2022, He managed to crack Amazon as (his position) I recently had him over on my podcast, and I asked him his exact approach that he followed for Amazon. This was it:  1. Ruthless focus on DSA – Vaibhav’s first 12 months after BCA = pure DSA grind. – Picked one language (C++) and went all in. – Every single day: solved LeetCode & SDE Sheet questions.   → Not random practice, but pattern-based prep.   → Focused on arrays, strings, trees, graphs, DP, stacks/queues. – Target: Finish the entire SDE sheet before even thinking about Amazon. Mock Interviews & Speed Under Pressure – Joined online mock interview sessions & practiced timed coding rounds. – Simulated the exact Amazon environment:   → Solved 2-3 medium/hard questions back-to-back, no peeking at solutions.   → After each session, did a ruthless self-review:   * Where did I get stuck?   * Which patterns do I still fumble?   * Which topics kill my speed? – Weekly routine: 1–2 mock interviews with peers and checking back on his progress.  3. Projects & Resume – Didn’t spam the resume with college projects. – Picked 1–2 strong development projects:   → Deployed real apps, showed end-to-end ownership (not half-baked clones).   → Added GitHub links, wrote clear READMEs, included system design basics. – For Amazon, resume is your first filter.   → Highlighted only what mattered: skills, projects, impact.  4. Smart Application Strategy – Didn’t wait for campus drives (there weren’t any). –Applied everywhere off-campus: Amazon careers, LinkedIn, referrals, even via coding contests. – Built connections: reached out to employees for referrals, but only after having a solid resume + LeetCode profile to show. –  Not once was he asked about his BCA, CGPA, or MCA. – Every interviewer cared only about:   → Can you solve problems?   → Can you explain your code?   → Have you built anything real? – All that matters: your DSA, your projects, your interview skills. I have been an SDE for over 3yrs now, but there was a time when I thought “writing clean code” was enough… Until systems scaled. Teams grew. Bugs multiplied. It made me realise that the real edge comes from understanding Design Patterns. So, here’s a quick breakdown of the 3 main categories every developer SHOULD know 👇 1️⃣ Creational Patterns: How Objects Are Born These deal with how you create objects so your code stays flexible, reusable, and loosely coupled. 💡 When to use: → You only want one instance (Singleton) → You need a step-by-step blueprint for complex objects (Builder) → You want to switch object types at runtime (Factory / Abstract Factory) → You need to clone existing objects efficiently (Prototype) 2️⃣ Structural Patterns: How Code Fits Together Think of this as the architecture layer, organising classes and objects so they work well together. 💡 When to use: → Bridging mismatched interfaces (Adapter) → Wrapping objects to add features (Decorator) → Creating a single simplified entry point (Facade) → Building tree-like object structures (Composite) → Optimising memory usage (Flyweight) → Controlling access and abstraction (Proxy / Bridge) 3️⃣ Behavioural Patterns: How Objects Talk & Work Together These patterns define how objects interact, share tasks, and adapt dynamically. 💡 When to use: → Notifying multiple listeners about changes (Observer) → Navigating through data collections (Iterator) → Encapsulating algorithms or operations (Command / Strategy) → Enabling undo/redo functionality (Memento) → Managing object state transitions (State) → Passing requests along a chain (Chain of Responsibility) Master these, and you won’t just be a “good” developer, you’ll be the one who can scale, maintain, and future-proof systems. #sde #systemdesign #lld #hld #connections #networking LinkedIn LinkedIn News India

When I was an intern, one advice stuck with me: “Don’t wait for a title to act like the role you want.” And honestly, it shaped how I grew in my career. ✅ Treat your internship like a full-time job. ✅ Review your peers’ PRs like an SDE2. ✅ Take ownership like a lead, even if no one asked you to. Because here’s the truth: You don’t magically “become” your next role after an appraisal or a switch. You act like it first. Growth is just nature replicating your behaviour. My 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 Internship Interview Experience – 2022 At IIT Kharagpur, internship placements are nothing short of intense. Over 1,500 students compete in a process that spans from August to November - a series of tests, shortlist announcements, and long interview days that feel like a second JEE. I wasn’t from the Computer Science department, so I hadn’t set high expectations for Microsoft. But after a surprisingly good test performance, I found my name on the shortlist. Interview day began at 7 AM and stretched till 10 PM. Here’s how it unfolded: 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟭 – 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗰𝘂𝗲 (𝟴 𝗔𝗠) We began with Operating Systems - not my strongest area. I politely steered the conversation towards Data Structures and Algorithms. The problem: Find the largest rectangle in a histogram.  • Started with a brute force approach, then optimized to a stack-based O(n) solution.  • Implemented it in ~15 minutes.  • Lesson: Always guide the interview to your strengths, but back it up with solid solutions. 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟮 – 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗽𝘀 (𝟭𝟬 𝗔𝗠)  • First, a graph theory problem: Find the size of the largest connected component in an undirected graph.  • Explained logic → coded it → all test cases passed.  • Next: Find the top k most frequent elements in an array.  • Began with brute force → optimized using a priority queue (heap) with guidance. By the end of this round, confidence was high. 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝟯 – 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 & 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝟭 𝗣𝗠) We discussed my past projects, especially an NLP-based one. The interviewer posed hypothetical challenges, testing practical problem-solving over pure theory.  • Final DSA problem: In an infinite tree, check if there are two nodes with a depth difference greater than 2.  • Designed a logical approach.  • Wrote clean pseudocode. This round felt more like a technical conversation than a stress test. 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 – 𝟮 𝗣𝗠 By mid-afternoon, the offer came through. From uncertainty to excitement, the journey felt like a full-day roller-coaster. 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀:  • Play to your strengths - redirect if needed, but solve with confidence.  • Start with a brute force approach, then optimize. This shows structured thinking.  • Communicate your thought process clearly - silence can be costly.  • Be ready for project discussions - interviewers want depth, not just syntax skills.  • Stay calm and adapt - long interview days test stamina as much as skill. I recently switched to an MTS-2 role at Adobe after almost 3 years as an SDE at MakeMyTrip 🎉 So, here’s a detailed breakdown of the Adobe interview process for the SDE-2 (Backend) role, in case you’re preparing for something similar 👇 🔷 Round 1: DSA Round (1 hour) → One medium-level LeetCode-style problem → Focused on Trees with a twist of Dynamic Programming → Language flexibility, but Java was preferred 🔷 Round 2: DSA Round (1 hour) → Another medium to hard-level question → Heavy focus on tree traversal logic and optimization → Expected to walk through edge cases and dry-run during the call 🔷 Round 3: Low-Level Design + Machine Coding (LLD) [1hour] → Task: A variation inspired by CricHeroes (a local cricket scorekeeping app) → Covered functional requirements, class design, methods, and handling dynamic data → Concurrency and multithreading were tested through follow-ups → Expected to write clean, working code within time 🔷 Round 4: Low-Level Design (LLD) [1 hour] → Task: Design a complete Flight Booking System → This round was based on my MakeMyTrip experience → Explored multiple approaches, optimizations, and variations post-implementation 🔷 Round 5: High-Level Design + Managerial Round [1 hour] → Task: Design for a basic Web Crawler system → Included design discussion + team collaboration and execution-related questions Result: Selected! 🎉 If you're aiming to switch to more Sr. SDE roles, having structured guidance can be a game-changer. Every working SDE hits this cycle at one point. And it’s always harder than it looks outside. In my 2 years as an SDE, I’ve seen it play out again and again, whether it’s me or my coworkers. 👉 You learn something new, then feel overwhelmed by how much you don’t know. 👉 You start projects, then get stuck in bugs that don’t make sense. 👉 You prepare for interviews, only to freeze when it’s live. It feels like you’re going in circles trying to switch to your dream company. But the truth? Each stage has its own answer 👇 1️⃣ Overwhelmed by too much tech?
