The latest AI-related incidents are a reminder that innovation and security must go hand in hand. From disclosure practices to accountability and secure testing environments, the discussion around AI safety is becoming increasingly important as these technologies evolve. Check out Juraj Jánošík's perspective on the implications for cybersecurity. #ESET #ArtificialIntelligence #Cybersecurity #AI #AISafety #TrustworthyAI
The recent reports involving OpenAI and Anthropic should be treated as a serious security warning, not as a demonstration of impressive frontier-AI capability. If a conventional software vendor - and especially a cybersecurity vendor - released or tested a system that escaped its intended environment and breached third-party infrastructure, the reaction would rightly be intense scrutiny and demands for accountability. Frontier AI should not be held to a lower standard simply because the technology is new or strategically important. This pattern is not new in the technology sector. When companies needed to run software and workloads, cloud providers turned that need into a mass-market platform, and security had to catch up later, with specialized vendors filling the gaps. We are now seeing a similar cycle with AI: organizations were using machine learning internally, frontier-AI companies identified a broadly applicable “generic algorithm” to commercialize, and security is once again being treated as an afterthought. That “ask for forgiveness instead of permission” approach is unacceptable when these systems can autonomously discover weaknesses, chain them together, and interact with real-world infrastructure. There is also a concerning communications dynamic emerging: incidents are sometimes framed in a way that emphasizes the strength or sophistication of the model, almost turning a security failure into a capability showcase. That is dangerous. Security incidents should not become marketing proof points in a race between frontier-AI providers. AI labs should also consider aligning their disclosures with established security-industry standard, including timely sharing of relevant technical details including indicators of compromise, vulnerability information or CVEs where applicable, and actionable information for defenders. As AI agents become more capable, the baseline expectations must rise accordingly. Strict isolation of evaluation environments, robust egress controls, credential hygiene, independent testing, clear accountability for third-party evaluation setups, rapid disclosure to affected parties, and external validation of incident timelines and impact. The industry needs to move away from improvisation and toward mature security engineering practices before these systems are deployed or tested at scale - something that security industry has been doing for years. The lesson is straightforward: innovation does not exempt AI companies from the security responsibilities that every other technology provider is expected to meet.

Michal Jankech, Vice President of Enterprise, Small Business, and Managed Service Provider Segments at ESET, joined Partnerships Unraveled to share how 16 years of product and strategic experience shape the way ESET approaches partners, communication, and change today. The conversation explores what drives durable partnerships in cybersecurity, why perception matters alongside substance, and how European heritage is landing as a genuine differentiator in the current market. A few points that stood out: ✅ A decade in product management shaped Michal's approach to partner strategy, with a core belief that many cybersecurity decisions are partner-led and the strongest relationships are built engineer to engineer ✅ Change in a matrix organization the size of ESET runs on influence and shared belief. Relationships, a clear direction, and a consistent story across the business are what carry transformation through ✅ ESET has been using machine learning in detection for years, well before AI became the industry buzzword. The current moment is bringing new visibility to that engineering-first heritage, and the company is now modernizing its communication to match ✅ Data sovereignty has moved from a compliance checkbox to a real buying criteria for European customers. As a fully European vendor with all core processing on the continent, ESET has turned what was once seen as a limitation into a genuine advantage ✅ The most durable partner programs share four pillars: rock-solid technology, predictable commercials, a clear road map partners can invest in, and constant listening to the practitioners closest to the customer The broader takeaway is that trust is still the core currency of cybersecurity. As ESET moves toward its 40th anniversary, that trust is the foundation for how the company invests in its partners, tells its story, and continues to evolve alongside a market that keeps changing.
