About NAIRR Pilot
What is the NAIRR?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds the potential to accelerate discovery and innovation and reshape our modern workforce. However, many researchers and educators lack access to the AI resources necessary to fully conduct their research activities and to train the next generation. The National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) is a concept for a shared national research infrastructure to bridge this gap by connecting U.S. researchers and educators to AI resources, namely computation, data, software, models, training, and educational materials to advance research, discovery, and innovation. Access to such infrastructure is expected to: accelerate AI and AI-powered Discovery and Innovation; expand the AI workforce and train the next generation of AI researchers and educators; increase capacity, integration, and use of world-class public and private-sector AI resources; and advance AI interpretability, security, and trust.

Allocations Working Group
The Allocations Working Group manages the peer review and resource matching processes for NAIRR Pilot resource requests, ensuring that proposals are compliant, aligned with the goals of the NAIRR Pilot, and utilize available resources appropriately. The group coordinates with resource providers for matching and onboarding, issues decision notifications, and sets initial allocations. Additionally, it is responsible for implementing allocation processes in alignment with guidance from the PPMO.

Coordination Group

User Experience Working Group
The NAIRR User Experience Working Group (UEWG) plays a vital role in the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) Pilot by ensuring researchers and educators can effectively access and use its computational, data, model, and software resources. The group engages with users from across various disciplines and experience levels to understand user needs, organizes workshops and training to broaden participation, and identifies barriers that may limit accessibility or usability. By focusing on the overall quality of the user experience —whether technical, educational, or logistical—the UEWG helps make NAIRR’s infrastructure both powerful and easy to use, while supporting the research and educational communities it serves nationwide.

Portal and Website Team
The Portal and Website Team develops and maintains the NAIRR Pilot Portal, which serves as the main entry point for information about the NAIRR Pilot. The portal provides details on application processes, current opportunities, projects, news, and events. It is regularly updated to reflect the Pilot’s activities and follows usability practices to make services accessible to a wide audience. In the future it will offer interactive sandboxes for exploration.

Metrics Team
The Metrics team is responsible for monitoring and reporting on the allocation and usage of NAIRR pilot-provided resources. The team develops and maintains the NAIRR Pilot XDMoD portal, which is an instance of Open XDMoD tailored to support NAIRR Pilot resources. The team provides custom reporting and analysis of NAIRR Pilot resource usage to help NAIRR Pilot management and operations teams make data-driven decisions to advance U.S. research capabilities and global leadership in AI. The metrics team also supports application performance monitoring and analysis to help researchers and resource providers optimize the use of computational resources.

Newsletter Team
The Newsletter team is responsible for developing and distributing regular communications to keep the NAIRR Pilot community informed and engaged. The team produces a comprehensive monthly newsletter featuring updates on NAIRR Pilot resources, upcoming events, training opportunities, and research highlights from across the project. The team collaborates with researchers, resource providers, and partner organizations to gather and curate content that showcases the impact of NAIRR Pilot-supported AI research. Through strategic communications and community outreach, the Newsletter team helps foster collaboration, share best practices, and ensure that researchers are aware of the full spectrum of computational resources, educational programs, and support services available through the NAIRR Pilot initiative.
