Many drugs, especially painkillers, can become dangerous in the wrong hands. Altering such medications can be a lucrative, though illegal, practice. Princeton-based Protega Pharmaceuticals has an answer.
The company focuses on producing abuse-deterrent pain management products. When applied to pills, for instance, the technology resists physical manipulation, chemical extraction and transformation for injection. Such products go a long way toward reducing substance abuse. In fact, the legislatures in both New Jersey and New York are pursuing measures that would require insurance companies to cover an abuse-deterrent medications if a physician prescribes it as needed.
