One of your portcos has 30 competitors right now. How many could you name, and how many are new since last quarter? Most of us get to about five from memory. The rest likely lives in your bookmarks bar, history, or an old list you made a while ago. We've just shipped the Competitor Agent to fix that. Open any company on Specter, press one button, and in about 30 seconds its competitors come back ranked closest-first. Each one sorted into direct, indirect or loosely related, with funding, valuation and revenue estimates attached. It reads between the lines on what a company actually does, then supplements each competitor with pulled web data so that context always reigns supreme in any defined competitive landscape. To build out the Competitor Agent, we asked power users how they map competition. The same questions popped up each and every time: who's in the market now, who's most competitive now, and why. Timing and context were always common denominators, and that's exactly what the Competitor Agent has been built on top of. Some of our users are building out entire competitor graphs for their portcos. Others are tapping into competitive landscapes in discovery via MCP. The competitor agent is live for every user today. Let me know what you think! 🔗 ⬇️ Link in comments.

Sequoia's best investment might be the partners who left. 19 firms. $110B+ in combined AUM. 3 continents. One alma mater. In 2023, Sequoia Capital split itself into three (Sequoia, Peak XV, HongShan). But the diaspora had been compounding for years before that, one partner at a time. Every fund on this list came out of Sequoia. In crypto. In cyber. In healthcare. Across India, China, and Israel. So for Issue 04 of The Mafia Series at Specter, we mapped the Sequoia diaspora. The funds (sorted by AUM) ↓ HSG — $61B · Neil Shen(founded Sequoia China) Paradigm — $12.7B · Matt Huang (ex-Partner) Peak XV Partners XV — $10B · Shailendra J Singh (ran Sequoia India) Source Code Capital — $7B · Charlie Cao (ex-Sequoia China) WestBridge Capital — $7B · Sumir Chadha (ex-MD, Sequoia India) Wing Venture Capital — $2.5B · Gaurav Garg (ex-Partner) Drive Capital — $2.2B · Chris Olsen (ex-Partner), with Mark Kvamme Transformation Capital — $1.6B · Todd Cozzens (ex-Partner, healthcare) A91 Partners — $1.5B · VT Bharadwaj (ex-MD, Sequoia India) Cyberstarts — $1.4B · Gili Raanan (ex-Partner) The next wave, raising now (2025–26) ↓ Mettle Capital — $350M · Tejeshwi Sharma (ex-Peak XV) Ambition Capital — $250M · Harshjit Sethi (ex-Peak XV) Both were founded by partners who left Peak XV this year. The mafia is still splitting off from the splinters. + Telescope Partners (Mickey Arabelovic), S CAPITAL (Haim Sadger), Zhencheng Capital 真成投资 (Jianwei Li), Evantic Capital (Matt Miller), Two Bear Capital (Michael Goguen), Sunflower Capital (Liu Jiang) and pebblebed (Tammie Siew). The full ranking of all 19 lives on Specter. Whatever you make of the breakups, the pattern is hard to argue with. Sequoia keeps minting investors who leave to build their own. If you came out of Sequoia and I missed your fund, drop it below and I'll add it. Issue 05 next Tuesday. Who should we cover? Drop names below ↓

"Predictive models aren't the point. Finding the story is." Here's why this framing matters whenever we talk about data: As a bit of context, Dominik told me this six years ago, back in Berlin and engulfed in deep debate. He's still right. And yet, our team at Specter spent 18 months building revenue and valuation models for 7 million companies. In private markets, a datapoint is never the answer. The only useful reaction to a metric jumping off the screen is, "Ok, but why?" - data simply tells you where to look so that you can go on and find out whether you're seeing a true signal or just someone else's VC cash being dumped in the incinerator. Finding these new stories is what we've always loved about this space. While LLMs are incredible at collating data about given companies, they don't really help us discover new ones. By design, they are "averaging machines" of the world's knowledge. Specter has always been about highlighting outliers. These new models combine years of accumulated data (team, web, app, product) and are only possible because of a decision we made 18 months ago: to start building our own proprietary revenue dataset from news and social signals. The models may not find the story for you, but they will tell you exactly where to pay attention to. There's a lot more to come from us on this front, and we're hiring AI engineers to help build what’s next. If you want to work together on building models that actually find the outliers, drop me a DM.
