  • Charles - Robotic Leaflet Distribution Platform

    -

A team of 8 electronic and information engineering students worked to create a robotic leaflet distribution system, named Charles, and compare the memorability of Charles to that of a human handing out similar leaflets. Charles was a multifunctional robotics platform, built using ROS, coded in a combination of C++, Python, and HTML5.

Charles was a multifunctional robotics platform, built using ROS, coded in a combination of C++, Python, and HTML5.

Charles could track individual users using a Microsoft Kinect sensor and the OpenNI libraries, present an emotive face to any device with a HTML5 compatible browser within Wi-Fi range, rotate and move to engage users, synthesize speech to explain more about its purpose, generate unique links and QR codes for each user, and interpret vocal input through a unidirectional microphone and the Pocket-Sphinx speech recognition libraries.

  • Kyoto Protocol Multi-Agent System Simulation

    -

Simulating the Kyoto Protocol in the form of a multi-agent system, with agents representing the countries of the world, required extensive knowledge of the Kyoto Protocol and its functioning in the real world. The agents' interests were made to match broad trends in governmental policy and acted within an environment that simulated the activities and possibilities the Kyoto Protocol involves (such as investments in carbon industry). The system also had a simplified model of the world…

The system also had a simplified model of the world economy to give context to any environmental actions.

This project was based on the Presage2 multi-agent systems framework and was completed over the course of 6 weeks by a team of 20 software engineering students.
