The digital divide between urban centres and rural communities has long been a pressing issue in the UK. However, recent announcements from major telecom operators highlight significant, tangible progress in bringing reliable connectivity to some of the country’s most remote areas. This week, we have seen major moves from both Virgin Media O2 and EE, demonstrating the multi-faceted approach required to tackle rural not-spots. VMO2's Next-Generation Push in Scotland O2 has announced a massive expansion of its 5G+ standalone network across Scotland, switching on the service in 66 large towns and cities, 175 smaller towns, and critically, 1,120 villages. This rollout, part of a £700 million Mobile Transformation Plan, brings faster speeds and lower latency to over four million residents. Crucially, VMO2 highlighted that these customers also now benefit from O2 Satellite, their recently launched direct-to-device service that provides vital backup connectivity in areas where traditional signals still cannot reach. EE Breaks New Ground on Islay Meanwhile, EE has shared a brilliant story of engineering persistence on the Isle of Islay in the Inner Hebrides. As part of the Shared Rural Network initiative, EE led the delivery of a new mobile mast in an area that has never had mobile signal from any operator. The project faced immense logistical challenges from navigating winter storms and transporting cranes via ferry, to pausing construction to protect nesting endangered red-billed choughs! The new mast now provides fast, reliable 4G to residents, emergency services, and local businesses like the historic Kilchoman Distillery, proving that connectivity is a critical economic lifeline for rural enterprises. These developments underscore that closing the rural connectivity gap requires a combination of massive infrastructure investment (like 5G standalone rollouts), collaborative initiatives (like the Shared Rural Network), and innovative new technologies (like satellite-to-mobile). It is incredibly encouraging to see the industry making such meaningful strides to ensure that everyone, regardless of geography, has access to the digital economy. Delivering the best fibre and wireless networks: we added 65,000 new fibre Internet customers, driving 11.2% Internet revenue growth. Q3 marks our first quarter of U.S. segment reporting with the acquisition of Ziply Fiber, contributing $160M in revenue and $71M in adjusted EBITDA. Leading in enterprise with AI-powered solutions: Bell Business Markets continues to deliver strong growth, highlighted by the launch of Bell Cyber as a unified security solutions business. We also augmented our Bell AI Fabric ecosystem through partnerships with Cohere, BUZZ HPC, ThinkOn, Coveo and Simon Fraser University - together building Canada’s largest sovereign AI infrastructure for secure, locally controlled AI compute technology. Building a digital media and content powerhouse: Crave subscriptions grew 24% year-over-year, reaching 4.3 million. We also launched Bell Streaming, offering exclusive bundles with Crave, Netflix, and Disney+ for Bell residential customers.
