A reference used to provide material that is critical to the practice of a standard. It represents a document, without which the standard could not be implemented. For example, in a standard that requires video MPEG compression, reference to ISO 13818-2 is critical, because without it the compression scheme is not defined. Thus, the normative references become an integral part of the standard. They can be thought of as indirect pointers to material that could otherwise literally have been put inline in the text of the standard. |

A reference that provides helpful, often critical, information related to a standard, but is not required to practice it. In other words, the standard is still complete and implementable without all of its informative references. For example, in a standard that requires video compression, it may be helpful to read ISO 13818-1 (Systems), but it is not required if you otherwise understood 13818-2. So, it would be an informative. |
