EC Commissioners arrive at Bangkok Remand Prison

Three Election Commissioners arrived at Bangkok Remand Prison in Lad Yao on Tuesday evening after the Appeal Court rejected their request to release them on bail.

The three convicted; EC chairman Vasana Puemlarp, EC members Prinya Nakchadtree and Virachai Naewboonnien arrived in a white van at about 7pm. It is reported that they then went through registration process and were led to their cells. The prison ordered them dinner from a restaurant near the prison.

It is reported that they would receive no priviledge as they would have to change from their clothes to brown prison uniforms. In their cells, the prison prepare personal items for them, such as toothbrush, soap and towel. They would have to get up at 6am like other inmates.

It is not known yet how long they would stay behind bars. Their lawyers said they would submit to the Supreme Court on Wednesday a request to free them on bail.

Under Thai law, once jailed, the commissioners lose their right to retain their posts.

The Criminal Court found the group guilty of malfeasance for mishandling the April 2 snap election and subsequent election. Their election rights were also stripped of for ten years.

Finally an impressive step in the right direction - but it is just the beginning of a long walk!

It is good to have seen the Judiciary step up to their place. This surely will help restore some faith in the Judical Branch. I hope that this is a real justice but not just some scpaegoat show. I hope that this event will help Thai people to view the Judiciary as the institustion that they can go to in order to obtain justice instead of taking it to the street.

Yeah man let Vasana, Prinya and Virachai have a taste of the inside of Lad Yao prison, so they have eaten their evening meal to-day by order from a restaurant near the prison, what is this already some kind of special treatment? Why couldn't these 3 have eaten the same food as other prisoners? What about tomorrow? So it is reported that they would receive no priviledge as they would have to behave like other prisoners in the same cells!? Hopefully the warden will not secretly deliver special prepared food for these 3 during their 4 years prisonment????? Same treatments, same colthes, same food and same prisoner-works in return for their up-keeps! Hopefully they will be sick and rotten in their cells soon!!!!!

If they are not to receive any priviledge, why did they get their dinner from a nearby restaurant? Do the other prisoners eat from nearby restaurants? Threatening the democracy of an entire country is a heinous crime. Let them break rocks and eat porridge for the next four years. They deserve far worse.

Secondly.. Seperation of political and administrative functions and police. It looks like a police state... with police commanders and generals as minister and other influential people. People don't trust police because they are part of the goverment so crimes go unpunished.

show me da money  25/07/2006 23:00

Why don't they just put a 1 million baht fine on votebuying per case. So if cought, bought the people paying the vote money and the person accepting the bribe money to vote for the party would have to pay 500,000 baht and maybe go to jail for 6 months and lose voting rights for 5 years. I think that should act as a deterrent. Maybe not in the beginning. But when some people get caught and jailed/have to pay the 500,000 ... people will stop it. Now bribe-voters get away with it just like that.

The Courts seem to be the only institutions whom the people will trust in the long run. Everyone should thank the judges that they did not bow to pressure. Let's hope a certain person who lacks charisma does not find ways to hurt these guards of justice for what they stood up for!

Taksin is probably happy about this. This is how he works. Now, everyone will talk about this and forget about his deeds. This fits right in his plan. I hope Thai people keep their eyes on the ball.

It would be interesting to know just how many people were bribed in the last election by TRT and how many millions of Bhat were paid for votes by these crooks.

History has shown us that times like this are pivotal. I know we are all tired of fighting, but now is the time to continue fighting, but twice as hard. The King can't do everything. Let's work twice as hard to continue cleaning house in Thailand, from the crooked traffic police all the way to the PM's mansion. Long Live Democratic Thailand, Long Live the King!

Pairote BKK 25/07/2006 19:00 There are hundreds of gay and transvestite inmates in the Bangkok Remand Prison. I hope they have a wonderful time tonight with these three new boys. This is good outcome for the three former stooges of the EC. In the end, justice must be served and this is the end of the line for these three criminals. I believe their jail terms should have been longer, at least 10 years, if not more, plus stiff fines and each of them should be further investigated and prosecuted for corruption and unexplained wealth that they have obviously acquired illegitimately, explaining their being very motivated to try every trick in the book to stay in the EC and to continue their malfeasance. Only if they are seriously hurt financially plus a long and deserving prison stay with no parole or pardon would they be humbled, change their ways and become truly law-abiding citizens when they finally get out of prison.

To Supaporn: The same thing happened in my village. The TRT people paid everyone 400 Bhat to vote for them and then said they would check and make sure the people voted for TRT. I think they did this all over Thailand. They are very bad people and cause us many pains.

Please publish the details of the judgement. While the sentence is welcome it must also satisfy the criteria of justice. Is the sentence imposed on account of a reorientation of the voting booths? We need to know.

I'm sure there is an "urgent" meeting of the TRT today and tonight trying to figure out how they can still cling to power and become even more filthy rich at the expense of all Thai people. It will be interesting to see what is the response of these low lifes.

Samui Savant  25/07/2006 20:04

The King made it clear he wants a new playing field. The courts were the last possible venue for the people to see "right" be done. It has been obvious that the EC commisioners were not playing by the rules. IT LOOKS LIKE THEIR PROBABLE 'RETIREMENT FUND THAT THEY COUNTED ON GETTING, MAYBE A LONG TIME, OR NEVER, COMING. GOOD! The Thai people deserved better than this "gang of Three" controling their lives.

It is too bad that there is not a caining law here in Thailand like there is in Singapore. These crooks deserve the most severe punishment there is. They along with the TRT regime have done so much harm to our country. These three crooks and all TRT are lower than soi dogs.
