This website presents constituent observations of a variety of constituents from a range of platforms (satellite, aircraft, lidar, microwave, and sonde) as probability distribution functions (PDFs).
The purpose of this website is to present historical constituent probability distribution functions useful for satellite (e.g. NASA Aura) validation. In conventional satellite validation the number of coincidences is typically small so it is useful to take a complementary view that considerably relaxes the coincidence requirements. This complimentary view considers tracer probability distribution functions (PDFs), particularly useful in the characterization of tracer mixing. A hierarchical approach is taken. First hemispheric PDFs on a given potential temperature surface are considered. If the spatial overlap is not sufficient, for example, due to limited latitude coverage, PDFs over smaller regions can also be considered.
