Our Mission, New Zealand Church Missionary Society

hands
our story

Our agency has been working in New Zealand from the very beginning of our country's history. In fact, the gospel first came to New Zealand in 1814 with the Church Missionary Society. Shortly after 1892, when a New Zealand branch was started, the first missionaries were sent overseas to serve the Lord; since then NZCMS has continued to send people into many parts of the world.

NZCMS also works closely with the Anglican Missions Board - a relationship that began in 1922. The South American Missionary Society of NZ merged with NZCMS in 2000, bringing together two agencies long involved in mission, and with the unswerving aim of making the grace of Jesus Christ known globally.

Our mission

The Church is called to mission. NZCMS gladly responds to this call of proclaiming the good news of God's grace in Jesus Christ to all people. Today, mission is 'from everywhere to everywhere.' Within this aim NZCMS desires to:

  • Send mission partners to such locations as the Spirit of God may direct - and to accept responsibility in maintaining them there.
  • Work closely with the Church where mission partners are sent.
  • Co-operate closely with other evangelical Anglican missionary agencies, especially the South American Missionary Society, and with other missions where necessary.
  • Recruit and train candidates for mission service.
  • Promote awareness of mission work so that members of NZCMS and other church people are continually informed about the needs of the areas where mission partners are serving.
  • Challenge people about the needs in areas where the gospel is yet to be taken.
