IBM has announced a new event  cloud platform called OpenWhisk is a cloud-first distributed event-based programming service. OpenWhisk provides a programming model to upload event handlers to a cloud service, and register the handlers to respond to various events.

Turbo Todd Watson reports from the Dev@ Center at Interconnect 2016:

  • The new platform facilitates the development of microservices that respond to things like mouse clicks or inbond sensor data from any IoT device.
  • Using the new platform, developers don’t have to worry about deployment level details such as provisioning servers.
  • The distributed, event driven paradign enables teams of developers to decompose their applications into smaller, discrete tasks that can be worked on simultaneously.
  • Swift and node.js are initial supported. Custom code environments can be created through Docker.
  • IBM has opensourced the Whisk platofrm to foster the development of the ecosystem
  • IBM is incorporating many of its Bluemix-based services into Whisk so they can be incorporated into Whisk-based applications.
