mpeg Encoder - for 95/NT

New / Fixes:

    Fraunhofer wants money

After getting an e-mail from Fraunhofer, I put the project offline. They want money for their effort in developing the mp3 standard (very logical), but since I don't get or want to make money for such a lousy mpeg encoder (not very compatitive, I think)...
I replied to their e-mail, but they haven't mailed me since. Is this a big joke??
Maybe I should charge money. $26 per encoder of which I have to pay $25 to Fraunhofer and other patent holders.
Or should I just cancel the whole project, because I promised the encoder would remain freeware?
Anyway. Anyone having my encoder should uninstall and delete it from their computer, cause it's not legal to use it anymore.. Sorry..

    Help file now available

Thanks to Indresh Chauhan there is now a help file available for mpeg Encoder.
It's ashame that the encoder is offline after Indresh put in a great effort to make a help file. It's not a 100% and not yet context driven, but we'll start working on that as soon as we have a green light from Fraunhofer.

    New update

Quickly fixed some things in v0.07a
Hopefully removed glitch at beginning of mpeg. I had to reset the subbands.
    Layer-3 mono works now.

    After a very disappointing v0.06, here's finally v0.07!
I have removed the codec for now, because it's not very useful. I redesigned the cdrom interface, which can be better.
For the moment I didn't program jitter correction, so for those with a cheap cdrom drive: bad luck. Next release will have it, ofcourse. But I programmed the whole day to make a v0.07 and now I'm getting tired.
I haven't tested it very good, but that's why you all people are out there.

    The best things are:

  • It should run on everyone's computer now.
  • You can now encode straight from a SCSI cdrom, without the need of an expensive codec.
  • I've tested it on a Plextor 12/20 and an IMS CDD522. (and it works perfectly)
It could be that some CDROM drives are not yet supported. If so, mail me the brand and model of your drive.

One more thing to say: sorry for all those people who send e-mail, but I couldn't answer them all.

    download: mpegEncoder v0.07a
Just copy it over the old 0.06 or copy it in a subdirectory (you'll have to unzip it with the '-d' flag). If you have trouble running it, you can try cleaning the registry (delete the key SoloH in CURRENT_USER/Software).

    New textfiles

    EAccess Violation

It seems like my linker is not doing a good job because when downloading v0.06, you'll have a 50-50 change of getting the error: EAccess Violation.

Encoding of Audio CDs finally works!
BUT you'll need:

  • Quality SCSI CD-Rom device. (I use a Plextor 12/20)
  • 32-bit ASPI Driver when using it on NT.
  • For now the Codec by Opticom/Fraunhoff must be installed. And when encoding it uses default settings (best available for that codec). Don't worry, when time arrives I'll implement the other engine as well. I just hadnt any...time

Note: Audio CD encoding encodes only using default options for now.

Points of interest:

  • extra-option for HQ switch, when using CD Encoding
  • I've managed to speed it up a bit (10-20%)
  • A lot of bugs are removed!
  • Multifile select works again.
  • 'assert on global_gain' shouldn't show it's face anymore.
  • ASPI Driver is now runtime loaded.
  • and more.... (even created some more bugs)

Facts, bugs and limitations:

  • This program and all future versions are FREE.
  • When encoding multiple selected files, it will use the same settings for all of them (so don't encode files with different sampling-rates or number of channels at the same time.)
  • layer III doesn't support 'joined stereo', so it's best to use bit rates of 112kbps or higher for stereo files.

The future will bring:

  • The option to use a third-party codec for encoding layer-3.
  • Speed improvement.
  • Queue and dequeuing.
  • Resume.

History:

v0.05 preview

SCSI CD-Roms are now added to the drive combobox. When you select a CD-Rom, with a audio CD inserted, a tracklist will be shown. For now you can select a track and grab it to a raw file on your target drive. Encoding is not (yet) supported.
You can listen to wavs displayed in the source directory by double clicking on it or pressing the spacebar. Or select a menuitem in the popup menu (right click).
Added a filetype mask combobox for source and target directory.
    Removed the bitrate combobox bug.
And other stuff I forgot to mention.

v0.04b

Strange. On compiling version 0.04 the drive combos stopped functioning (little bug in Borland CPP Builder).
Fixed only bugs in the interface, because I haven't much time right now.
I also enabled the maximize button, which I forgot.

You can now press ctrl-a to pop up a about-box, which in the future will contain a little manual (anyone want to write one, with a small faq on audio mpeg?? Credz or ads will be given of course!).

v0.04

On many request (and my own) the window is finally resizable (or should I say re'stretchable...) Take a look and try to find the 'hidden' feature of stretching. I hope you all like this feature.

There's a new 'extra' option to decrease the priority of the encoding thread (on the fly). This is useful when you want to keep working with other applications. It's best to keep the priority to 'lowest' (this does NOT mean the speed will decrease). Be advised: When using the 'idle' priority setting encoding will pause as soon as a screensaver is switched on,.

Annoyed by the changing of some parameters when clicking a .wav file?? Deselect the 'Auto Freq/Chan' in the extra options section. This is also useful when encoding from slow access media, like tape drives.

Added 8-bit file support (why 8-bit ??? because a lot of newbees on the mpeg front tried encoding 8-bit files and mailed me that it makes strange noises, so to not just displaying a 'no go' pop up, I've implemented a simple 8 to 16 bit converter.

v0.03a

    some bug fixed:
doesn't crash on stop encoding (as far as I could see)
    crashes a lot less.

v0.03

reading of WAV PCM 16-bit mono/stereo files
    newer simplified interface

v0.02

    added MPEG-1 layer III
added MPEG-2 for layer I and II
now auto saves config in registry
      \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SoloH\mpeg Encoder\
    added multi-file select
    added 'buggy' remaining time

v0.01

only MPEG-1 layer I and II
reads RAW PCM 16-bit mono/stereo files

Latest update:

(works only with release v0.07a and above)

    no update available

Note: just unzip and copy over the older version
