With the Online Harms White Paper, the government of the United Kingdom strives to “lead towards new, global approaches for online safety that support democratic values, and promote a free, open and secure internet.”

However, GNI fears that that the proposed regulatory framework risks creating significant impacts on users’ rights,innovation, and competition in the digital economy. We are also concerned this broad approach could set a precedent that could be misused by others to silence critical, dissenting voices.
