    On 22 August 1864, the first Geneva Convention was signed: a treaty of written rules to limit suffering in war. The Red Cross protects and helps war victims and ensures these rules of war are followed. They have received the Nobel Peace Prize three times, in 1917, 1944 and 1963.

    Today we remember Linus Pauling, the only person to have been awarded two undivided Nobel Prizes. In 1954 he was awarded the in Chemistry. Eight years later he was awarded the 1962 for his opposition to nuclear weapons. Pauling died in 1994.
