    See 🧵. I should write a longer-form comment about my experience growing a company around this. You’re going to be forced to take bad terms as a small fish, knowingly or not. You’re never going to stop negotiating contracts. It’s always going to take more time than you want.

    Sometimes when I do business with a Big Company I wind up sending exhausting emails that take hours to write and involve dozens of requests to drop or alter contract language, and every damn time it's like "am I being too extra rn?"

    This is the clearest explanation of “Service Mesh” I’ve ever seen by . No matter what tech you love or hate, I highly recommend watching the first 20 minutes. Its 100% product-agnostic. (Last 10m are Consul-specific demos w/ a Touch Bar!)

    Super important with the L7 features: you only pay the full discovery cost once. After that, we setup an edge-updated cache on the local Consul agent. All future routing, traffic splitting, etc. is effectively free relative to normal service discovery. 🤯💨

    Consul 1.6 supports HTTP routing, traffic splitting, and custom service resolution rules. For example, a request to "web.service.consul/admin/users" may now resolve to the "admin" service, split to v2 for 10% of users, and rewrite the path to "/users".

    Mesh Gateways in Consul 1.6 enable service connections *across networks* automatically while preserving full end-to-end encryption. They work even if you have overlapping IP addresses. Multi-VPC, multiple K8S clusters, multi-cloud and any mix in between.

    Today at HashiConf EU we announced Consul 1.6 with two huge features: Mesh Gateways and full Layer 7 support with HTTP routing, traffic splitting (canary, blue/green, etc.), service redirect, failover, and more. 🚀
