Tim Bray, a prominent engineer and a vice president at Amazon, said he quit over the recent firing of workers who protested about safety conditions. Firing them was “evidence of a vein of toxicity running through the company culture,” he said.

Honeycomb is ridiculous. There is a learning curve, but it’s not that steep. Once it clicks, it’s so good. The event/span translation for tracing works great. Linking things across services is a pain, but it’s one time pain, and not honeycomb specific.

Combining the power of that with distributed tracing, and I'm pretty excited about how much we will be able to see whats going on with the system initiative.

So - it took me a minute to understand, but is essentially an infinitely wide, flat table. You jam it full of stuff, and then slice it however you want. I've talked about it a lot before, but this was the thing that clicked in my brain using it today on my own data

And in cases like this, I think that means you can't assume that people who work for you are okay. You have to check in, you have to be explicit, you have to restate expectations and assurances. Again and again. It matters, and people will appreciate it. I guarantee. /end

Managers _are_ authority figures, which means you have power. Power imbalances are so much easier to navigate when they are explicit, there is nothing to be gained by pretending they don't exist. As people with power, it's your responsibility to wield it responsibly, 4/?

One, because omg they do love it! It's the kind of thing I'd never thought about until I heard it said out loud and it was really comforting. But two, and mostly, because saying that is in itself, recognition of the roles managers, founders, etc have in crises like this: 3/?

They wanted to hear "it's okay to not be at 100%. What you're being asked to do is impossible. You're doing great.". On hearing this, said something like "brain weasels love reassurances from authority figures." and that made me so happy because of two things: 2/?

A quick "working during covid-19" story about that I really appreciate. We were having weekly town halls that were mostly and giving updates related to the pandemic. It quickly became clear though that people were mostly there for reassurances. 1/?

I feel very lucky to work somewhere with founders who say things like this and mean it. This is good, straightforward advice. Particularly appreciate the call out of "performative normalcy".

Pay attention to the new immigration suspension. It might mean people on work visas might not transfer their visa to new employers (which means they have to be deported if they are fired/laid off). It 's also not clear what's happening to the green cards in progress.

Took this photo today even though it breaks my heart. I'm grateful for my family's health and security but worry constantly about her and the impact this is having. She's doing great, but I'll still worry.

The lack of a nationally viable left third party in this country does a lot to ensure that we only ever move right. And pretending otherwise doesn't help anyone.

Happy y'all! To my trans friends and colleagues, I see you and appreciate you, you mean the world to me. Trans rights are human rights. To everyone, let's keep fighting transphobia and protesting anti-trans legislation!

does anyone know of Etsy shops, creators, etc. who are sewing masks right now? I'd like to buy a handful for my partner and I, and then pay for a bunch more to donate to health care workers.
