sure as a tough question well into my evening... "engineering-focused"-maybe it means doing something that makes it easier for engineers to develop? I find Kafka Connect very engineering focus; provided those connectors understand and allow me to use SMTs.

Yeah. The PM that drove SMT was brilliant :)

Love this question. This really highlights to me that we go through phases of buzzwords (e.g. "product thinking"), when in my mind what is happening is increasing appreciation and understanding. Engineers are now getting loaded up with expectations

Boo. This isn’t a loaded. We build software for people to use and to make a business work. The more an engineer understands the context they work in, the better off they are. If your job is to code HFT algorithms, maybe you don’t need to be product focused.

1. Design experiences with dependency failures in mind 2. Build modular experiences (story mapping is an approach) 3. Build incremental and testable pieces

Understand the engineering possibility space well enough to know which possibilities are adjacent to and incrementally reachable from the current reality, which aren’t, and why.

For me: 1) understand system constraints that have product implications (e.g., eventual consistency, read-your-writes, immutability) and 2) own technical debt and operations holistically as part of the product.

"Quality Views" are my attempt at helping with #2:https://twitter.com/breckcs/status/894237696016752641 …

My understanding is that this is basically what the DevOps movement was supposed to be - _op_erating the business in a way that accommodated the realities of software _dev_elopment and vice versa. Before it turned into a buzzword and lost all meaning, I mean.

These frames feel a bit forced to me. The more transparency and alignment there is into how functions/orgs/processes contribute to
long term business value
the better. Eng thinking like product is in service of that. Product considering security, reliability, etc is also. - 1 more reply
