There is actually a good chance that the tree will survive that. The core of the stem is usually dead anyhow and can shield the actually living parts of the tree from the heat.

I don't know, that looks like a pretty significant wound. We had a tree, at least twice that big, get hit, & it got blown down in a wind storm a few years later. It looked like it had only superficial damage.
