When a large fraction of that employee comp goes straight into the pockets of landlords, while Middle America is starved for local spending, is this such a bad thing?

Would imagine it's still probably worth it for most moving to a lower cost/lower tax area and not having a commute.

GitHub has localized comp too - they still pay incredibly well, highly competitive salaries. There’s no need to over read this for what it is. FB will still pay more than most other tech companies on the planet.
