About VAT for Amazon Business

Add VAT details to your account to ensure that you pay the correct rate of VAT. Entering VAT details allows us to collect an import fees deposit from you so that we can pay import fees on your behalf.

What is VAT?

Value-added tax (VAT) is a percentage charge that consumers and businesses pay when purchasing certain types of goods and services.

All businesses with an annual taxable turnover greater than their country’s VAT threshold must register for VAT. Find more information on VAT in our VAT and Invoices help directory.

Registering your VAT number on Amazon Business

If your business has a VAT number, you must register it to your Amazon Business account. We’ll invite you to enter a VAT number when you create an Amazon Business account.

We encourage you to create an Amazon Business account using your existing credentials to use the self-service VRN upload function alongside more Amazon Business benefits. You may migrate to an Amazon Business account with your personal Amazon credentials to keep your existing VRN and invoice history. You can perform this action during the Amazon Business account creation process.

Alternatively, you can create a new Amazon Business account. If you plan to add members and have concerns about providing access to historical orders, we recommend this option. This option requires an email address that's different from your personal account.

Entering VAT details will ensure you pay the correct VAT. Where required, it will also allow us to apply an import fees deposit to your purchase so we can pay customers taxes on your behalf.

To be valid for zero-rate VAT on intra-EU transactions, an EU VAT number must be in the VAT Information Exchange System of the European Commission (VIES). A UK VAT number must be on the “Check a UK VAT number” website.

If your business operates in more than one country, you must enter the VAT number and address for each country in which your business operates.

It may take 3-4 working days for us to verify your VAT number. We advise you to wait until after we verify your VAT number to begin making purchases. We'll send you an email when we verify your VAT number.

Declaring your type of business

In the EU, certain types of business customers are subject to specific VAT and/or invoicing rules. These customers include:

  • Local governments
  • Companies part of a VAT group
  • Companies VAT registered in an EU country through a financial representative
  • Customers benefitting from a VAT exemption on purchases
  • Country-specific types

If you are one of the preceding customer types, you must declare your business type to maintain VAT/invoicing compliance for Amazon in the EU.

For new customers, during registration, you will see a tick box to declare your business type. Once registered, you should visit the Manage VAT section of your business account to ensure that your VAT details are correct and avoid invoicing issues.

For current customers, visit the Manage VAT section of your business account. We will ask you to provide additional information and officially declare your business type.

Add, edit or update your VAT details

Only Amazon Business customers can add, edit or update VAT numbers for your business account at any time.

To view all VAT numbers registered to your account, go to Business settings and select Manage VAT.

Amazon Business customers can add new VAT numbers or update existing numbers. Select Manage to change the information for any existing number.

If you want to change the VAT number associated with your Amazon Business account, use the self-service options such as the VRN upload function if you are an Amazon Business customer. If you are not an Amazon Business customer, we recommend that you create a free Amazon Business account.

All members of your Amazon Business account can view the VAT numbers registered to the account.

Required: To comply with the Romania B2B E-invoicing and E-reporting mandate, update your VAT ID from the Manage VAT page.

Note: Invoices will use the address associated with the company’s registered VAT number by default.
