Frequently asked questions

1. How is the reading experience different on Kindle Colorsoft than on
Kindle Paperwhite?

The Colorsoft display is distinct from the Paperwhite display. The Kindle Colorsoft is designed to provide a high-quality reading experience in both color and black and white. You may notice that the texture or brightness of the display looks different than the Kindle Paperwhite display. That's because of the color filter layer that creates the easy on the eyes color reading experience on Kindle Colorsoft. If you are looking for a slightly crisper black and white reading experience, you may want to check out Kindle Paperwhite, which has the fastest page turns and highest contrast ratio of any 2024 Kindle device.

2. Can I enable system-level Dark Mode on my Kindle Colorsoft?

Dark Mode is currently not available on this device. You can enable a similar reading experience within millions of books using the Page Color feature, which, like Dark Mode, inverts the book page color to black and the book text color to white. To enable the feature in eligible books, open your book, access the Quick Actions menu, and toggle the Page Color to black.

3. How does color impact Kindle Colorsoft battery life?

Kindle Colorsoft has up 8 weeks of battery life for you to enjoy. The Color Style selection (Standard or Vivid) on Kindle Colorsoft has no impact on battery life. If you are looking for longer battery life, you may like Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, which both have up to 12 weeks of battery life.

Great color eink ereader!
5 out of 5 stars
Great color eink ereader!
I am separating this review into several sections, reviewing what I like about the color capabilities of the Kindle Colorsoft, and then the capabilities of the new generation of the Kindle colorsoft in general, followed by what I don’t like about the Kindle Colorsoft. The Kindle Colorsoft’s Color capabilities: I really like the way this new Kindle Colorsoft displays color. I like that the book covers in the Home and Library view are all in color and comic books from the Kindle store look great. The 7 inch screen size is a little small for most comics, but you can either double tap on a frame to go to frame by frame viewing mode, or you can even zoom in by pinching your fingers together and expanding out. Overall for me this was very workable for viewing comic books, but without these features the words would have been too small for me to comfortably read on a 7 inch screen. Magazines look good too and it's nice to be able to see figures or pictures in a book in color instead of grayscale. However, I found that Epub formatted books and the Kindle magazines I have didn’t have the ability to zoom in on the pictures. With PDF books I found that the fonts were very small on the 7 inch screen and since it is a PDF there is no way to adjust the font size. However, you can zoom in or you can change the orientation to landscape to increase the size of the page slightly; although this does require you to scroll up and down to see the whole page. Also landscape isn’t accomplished by simply turning your Kindle on its side, you need to go into font settings and change to the mode manually. So, although I overall give this Kindle 5 stars as a great way to read books and comics and I love its color capabilities, there aren’t a lot of ways you can take advantage of the color unless you read a lot of comic books, magazines or the like. You will need to decide if the color capabilities are worth the additional price for you based on what you read. The New Generation of Kindles: I really like the capabilities of the new Kindles. I have always preferred e-ink for reading vs looking at a tablet or phone. I find it much easier on my eyes and it feels like I am reading an actual book. I like that the newer Kindles have “front lighting”, so you can read in any environment without needing a reading lamp. The original Kindles didn’t have the front lighting, so like a normal book you needed to sit under a light source to be able to read the page. The front lighting is much easier on my eyes than back lighting (like a phone or tablet uses). I also really like that they have “warmth” settings which make the normally white/blue light of the Kindle more “yellow” for nighttime reading. I find the controls very easy and intuitive to use and so far the battery life has been great. This model is supposed to last up to 8 weeks on one charge (depending on use). I’m pleased that the charging port is USB-C, so I can use the same cable I use for my phone and laptop to charge the Kindle. A charge cable is included but there isn't a charging plug included. I find the 16GB of onboard storage more than suitable. Even with color items (which are generally larger) you can fit a lot of books in the 11.25GB of available storage space. I was surprised to see that the Kindle also supports audiobooks and that my Audible books were automatically displayed in my library with my Kindle books. There are no built in speakers or earphone jack on the Kindle, so you need to pair bluetooth earbuds to the kindle to listen to the books. There is also a function to read the page to you as well. I found pairing my earbuds was very easy, but I also found the sound left something to be desired. It's a nice feature to have, but I will stick to using my phone for audiobooks. One of my favorite things about this Kindle is how light it is. It feels great in my hand and I can hold it easily with my fingertips. I also think it's great that it is waterproof. What I don’t like about the new Kindles: My biggest complaint about the new Kindles is about their capabilities when using media that isn’t supplied by Amazon (things other than Kindle Books, Audible Audiobooks). The Kindle book experience is great with all of your books instantly available for you to review. However if you want to import an epub, mobi, PDF or other document things get kind of difficult. Based on my experience only Windows systems can mount the new Kindles like a drive to transfer media to it. I have a Mac and I needed to download a “Send to Kindle” app or use the “Send to Kindle” website to transfer media. And as I found out you almost need to use these options if you want the items you are loading to come through properly formatted and in color. However there are some limitations with “Send to Kindle”. There is no support for mobi files and only up to 50mb files are supported through the app (this includes all supported types including PDF, DOC, DOCX, TXT, RTF, HTM, HTML, PNG, GIF, JPG, JPEG, BMP, EPUB). Up to 200mb files are supported through the website. With full color media, it won’t be unusual to go over 50mb in size. If you need to load a book that doesn’t meet the supported types it will need to be done via “side loading”, meaning via direct USB transfer. The Send to Kindle app has a “USB File Manager” function so you can copy over media directly, but as mentioned before, sideloaded files will not be in color and may not even be recognized. So if you have a large mobi or PDF comic collection the Kindle Colorsoft may not be the ideal solution for you. Final Thoughts: I am a real fan of this Kindle. I feel like I will actually be reading more with it since it's so easy on my eyes and comfortable in my hand. And I absolutely love the color capability and the look of the comics. I do wish it would be easier to load non-Amazon content, but overall that isn’t a show stopper for me personally.

I have been a Kindle user for over 20 years and love these devices. I left my Kindle Paperwhite in a foreign country, and it didn't make sense to have it shipped back to me, so I went looking for a new Kindle. I had been following the release of the Kindle Colorsoft before I lost my device. I thought it was priced high and saw there were issues with the yellow bar, but it still looked like a good iteration of Kindle technology. When I lost my Kindle Paperwhite, there happened to be a sale on the new Kindle Colorsoft. I've had the Colorsoft for just under a month and have read multiple books on it. Here are my thoughts:

Overall Quality: I think this is a great Kindle. The software works well, and it feels like an upgrade over the Kindle Paperwhite I lost. I like the 7-inch size of the Colorsoft—it's easy to hold and doesn't feel heavy. I've never had issues with Kindles breaking or lacking durability, and the Colorsoft feels just as sturdy as other versions I've owned.

The Color Display: When I was showing my new Kindle to one of my children, he remarked, "The color makes it look like artwork"—it wowed him. I really like the color display. Yes, the colors are muted, but that's what makes it so appealing, in my opinion. I've read picture books with my Colorsoft and thought the colors were excellent. If I wanted more vibrant colors, I would read on my phone or tablet, but I use my Kindle specifically to avoid reading on those devices. One review I read mentioned that the Colorsoft was easy on the eyes, and I agree.

Price: I think the price is too high at full retail. I wouldn't have bought it at the original price, but I was able to get it on sale and also do a trade-in, which finally made it worthwhile for me.

Yellow Bar Issue: I haven't encountered this problem yet. I'll update my review if it appears.

Overall: I really like the Colorsoft and gave it 5 stars because it's a great device and I was able to purchase it at a reasonable price.

I wish the colors were brighter but the battery is really GREAT! I absolutely love my kindle colorsoft. This is my second kindle. I have the paper white as well and I love the colors of the colorsoft especially with highlights and seeing the covers. It’s more appealing to the eyes when picking a book. I think the size is perfect, but I would love to see it larger, it is super light weight and doesn’t hurt your wrist holding it. It’s super easy to navigate and set up! I wish you could listen to the audio book WHILE reading but hopefully that’ll be an update soon! As far as functionality it is great for those who are avid readers because it allows you to read on the go and fits in your smaller purses perfectly.
It works for what it’s used for! I enjoy having hundreds of books at my fingertips while on the go and traveling without having to bring and carry a ton of books! I average 40-60 books a month so the storage is more than enough!

The media could not be loaded.
I must be on my 5th or 6th Colorsoft - had to return each one due to various significant technical issues.

All units have had the infamous yellow block at the bottom of the screen, which is annoying and makes the product feel cheap (poorly produced, sent to market too soon). On this issue, I gave up.

The next few have had additional issues like not being responsive to touch (page doesn’t turn, can’t adjust settings, etc.), responding wildly inappropriately to touch (page turns backwards in book instead of forward, swiping down from top turns page or simply does nothing), highlight function doesn’t work at all or will pull up Wikipedia instead of highlighting the text).

    Among other issues.

The battery life is relatively poor. I’ve had other kindles for a decade and have been highly impressed with them. The battery on the Colorsoft lasts a few weeks (previous kindles lasted 2 months) despite similar use.

The auto adjust brightness doesn’t work well - sometimes it doesn’t work at all and other times it just doesn’t dim or brighten enough (or takes several minutes to adjust at all).

The screen clarity is woefully deficient. My older kindles were far superior with clear text. The Colorsoft text is grainy and less focused / clear. It actually irritates my eyes to read it, which never happened on other kindles.

Recently, the text from one page can be easily seen after flipping many pages, even when it’s set to refresh. The only way to get rid of the ghost images is to reset the device, but it happens repeatedly so I have to reset it after each page turn. Since that’s a process that takes a minute or more, it renders the device unusable.

The most recent device they sent me was a used one (and I had to advocate firmly for them to honor the warranty at all). I’m not at all surprised it has all these issues. Maybe newly produced versions are better, but Amazon is probably trying to get rid of the older ones at a profit, despite the product being rife with serious issues that prevent it from working as advertised.

I wish I’d kept my Paperwhite. The Colorsoft has proven to be a waste of a lot of money.
