Editorial Reviews
Review
‘Latin for the Illiterati is a perfect companion for every reader, student, and scholar on his or her lifelong journey.’ – Ingram
‘Stone…has penned one of those rare reference works that is both highly affordable and highly useful…While many resources supply similar information…few sources also include such a range of sayings and phrases, in this case well over 5,000. In addition, the last section of stone’s work is a real boon to reference librarians…Highly recommended.’ – Library Journal
‘If you’re a student trying to improve your vocabulary, this is a great book. If you’re a law student trying to figure out what phrases meant before they meant what they did what they mean, this is a great book. For those who have forgotten the three years of parochial-school Latin, this is a really great book.’ – Publisher’s Weekly
Latin for the Illiterati will be a terminus ad quem (i.e., finishing point) for many a question about the terra incognita (i.e., unknown land) that even common Latin expressions are to many people today. [The book], of course, delves more deeply into the Latin lexicon than a polyglot source…and there in lies its value.’ Bene! – Rettig on Reference
‘A ready reference dream come true. . .’ – American Libraries

- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2009Format: PaperbackI just happened to run across this book the other day, and have not put it down. It has relly given me a great way to look up phrases and termonology that I had been searching for. Please do not use the online translators, they are pure garbage and will not gine you the correct grammar or translation for the phrase you are looking for. This book does not have them all, but it does have many, many that you may have seen or heard over the years.
I would recommend it for anyone who has an interest in Latin at all, or for the student of Latin who is starting out. You can increase your Latin vocabulary tremendously right now if you really wanted just by reading this book.
A lot of fun and a must have.

川田正人Reviewed in Japan on June 20, 20145.0 out of 5 stars
Customer ReviewReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 26, 20105.0 out of 5 stars Good reference volume
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis is very much a dense reference volume really, for looking up phrases as and when you come across them. It's perhaps not quite so good as something to dip into like, for example, Morwood's A Dictionary of Latin Words and Phrases or Ehrlich's A Dictionary of Latin Tags and Phrases which, though having fewer entries, contain more supporting explanation. However if you're of a like mind with me you will still enjoy opening this at random and picking out a few phrases.
The first half of the book lists common words and short expressions, and most of the second half is longer sayings from literary and other sources. It is finished off with a short section on abbreviations, a few other odds and sods, and a brief English-Latin index. Each Latin entry is accompanied by a simple translation with no further explanatory notes (except the name of the author where literary sources are involved).
As well as this book, Jon Stone has also published a longer work specifically on maxims, proverbs, mottoes and quotations: Dictionary of Latin Quotations.
