Silvia Moreno-Garcia tells this moving story, from her grandmother’s perspective, of her family’s experiences during the Mexican Revolution. While focused on a singular incident of a 13yo girl fighting off a tiger attack, Moreno-Garcia shares many hardships and travesties of war. How regular, hardworking people are impacted. I love the flow of her writing. Powerful short story. Narration: I enjoyed Cynthia Farrell’s performance. It was the perfect juxtaposition of elderly woman telling the story of her teen self.

As the author, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, describes her short story, “It’s based on my great-grandmothers experiences during the Mexican Revolution, which consisted of hunting, scavenging and surviving despite all odds.” I thoroughly enjoyed how, in less than 30 pages, I could get to know the protagonist’s family and find myself immersed in their struggles to survive the atrocities of the revolution.

The story begins, “The tiger came to the mountains the summer when the train went off the rails, the summer I turned thirteen.” To me this seems to be a metaphor not only for the impact this revolution had on a country, but also how it turned one child’s world upside down. While the bulk of the story is only a snippet of time in the life of our young protagonist, I’m grateful that it concludes by giving us a glimpse into how her life unfolded and she was able to carry with her the rich memories of family.

This was a short but powerful story with a richly detailed narrative. It’s both tragic and brave, reminding the reader of the strength and resilience of its female characters and their determination to keep family safe.

Short, but sweet. A story of a family living through the trying times of Revolution. Not a political rendition, but the reality of normal people. Mama & the children, with a few extended family members, try to maintain their farm after both father's left for the war. They had to deal with soldiers from both sides raiding & stealing their not-quite-enough-already food stuffs & animals. The older children & young women hiding so as not to be taken & forced to become soldiers, or worse raped or killed. The protagonist is a young girl who, while hiding with her sick brother, shoots & kills a tiger which had escaped the circus when it's train derailed. Horrible times, but such a sweet story. I didn't realize just how short this story is! Well worth reading, but I wish it had been longer!!

The summer the tiger came to the mountains is a fairytale that occurred during the revolution of 1917. Of feast to famine, to village kidnappings…to rapings…not much has changed. And yet so much has at the same time.

War humbles us, and the most technologically advanced of its citizens and objects into the bare minimum bare mess of its bones.

The story is beautiful. The imagery is great. The way it brings life to events from history class is beautiful. It reminds us that "great events" in history have terrible costs sometimes. But in the end this story is beautiful. It is not joyful. But it is beautiful.

This was a very short, but well-written book. It does chronicle an ugly sliver of history, but the short length of the book gives readers just the barest glimpse. As a short story, there's not a whole lot there, but the fact that it is based on her great grandmother's life during the Mexican Revolution does make it more compelling.

Good writing and an interesting diversion if you're looking for something short, but I just don't think this one will leave much of a lasting impression on me.

Finally, I saw it, caught underneath that spectral glow, its eyes glinting yellow at me: it was a tiger. Like the one in the book we’d read as children. H is for hippo and L is for lion and T is for tiger.”

Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s ‘The Tiger Came to the Mountains’ is Book 1 in Trespass, Amazon’s short story collection that focuses on encounters between humans and animals. Each title is accompanied by a free audiobook.

Mexico 1917. During the Revolution when soldiers come to their farm, a thirteen-year-old girl and her brother are sent to take shelter in a mountain cave. There has been disturbing news of an escaped tiger following a train derailment. The children find themselves coming face to face with the magnificent, yet fearsome creature.

The story was inspired by the experiences of Moreno-Garcia’s grandmother during the Mexican revolution and an incident involving an escaped circus lion.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia writes exquisitely and manages to pack so much into the 24 pages of this gem of a tale.

'The Tiger Came to the Mountains' is Book 1 in Trespass; a short story by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. It is part of Amazon's short story collection that focuses on encounters between humans and animals.

“I know some softhearted people might think it is cruel to kill a squirrel, but it’s crueler still to watch your siblings growing up stunted and skinny.”

The story takes place in Mexico, 1917. During the revolution which serves as the backdrop to this tale, that was inspired by true events. The short story becomes about a young girl and her family, as they try to survive during a difficult time. It explains how the people of the land are in despair as war continues to take away their loved ones and their resources.

    “but hunger is harder.”

When soldiers come to the family farm, a thirteen year old girl—Macharra—and her brother are sent to a cave in the mountains—by order of their mother—to seek shelter, after the announcement of an escaped Tiger. Up in the mountains the brother and sister come to find themselves cornered by the Tiger.

“When the stars are extinguished in the sky and the moon goes dim, as I’m sure it must—nothing can last forever—“

The book holds a coming-of-age vibe which offers a sense of magical realism which I found to enjoy this aspect of. By showing that although during desperate times there is still hope.

“I could either lie back and sink into the womb of the earth, into the arms of death, or I could attempt to rise up through the many layers of the underworld.”

Considering the short length, the story presents as surprisingly in depth portrayal of Macharra and it is this that is its main strength. The encounter with the Tiger felt as if it was going to be a defining moment, i didn’t quite feel as if that was the case. However, that doesn’t take away from the journey of this story.

This was the second short story I have read by Silvia Moreno-Garcia; her writing is lovely, and somehow she mama to make less than 30 pages feel like a novel.

It was good. I enjoyed reading it. It packed so much in so little pages. I didn't expect the Tiger would be killed, thought it would become their friend. Overall, an enjoyable read.

This first offering from the Trespass Collection is a fairly short story that relates the incident pretty much defined by the title. However, despite the title and nature themes/aspects of the Trespass series, the whole encounter with the tiger is quite brief and doesn’t seem as important as the setting.

The incidence is question takes place in 1917 and is set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. The story is not about the Mexican Revolution itself but it gives the story an added intensity. Instead it focusses not upon those involved in the fighting but upon those struggling to survive because of the turmoil it causes. It is an intriguing setting as it involves a historical event not often covered (probably due to how much else was going on in the world around the time).

Thus the story becomes about a young girl, Machorra, and her brother, as well as their extended family, trying to survive during this disruptive, difficult period.

According to the author’s blurb it is based on true life events when her grandmother encountered a lion in similar circumstances. For some reason the author has swapped the lion for a tiger.

The promotional material for the Trespass Collection gave me the impression, possibly wrongly, that it would be concerned with forces of nature reasserting themselves of striking back against the encroachment of human civilisation.

This story doesn’t really capture that aspect. The eponymous tiger is, of course, not an animal native to Mexico and has escaped from a circus. As such it is the alien in the environment rather than the human protagonist.

In fact, the encounter with the tiger feels a little downplayed or incidental to the personal journey of Macharra even though it appears to be referred to as the defining moment of her life.

Considering the short length, the story presents as surprisingly in depth portrayal of Macharra and it is this that is its main strength. Without the reader’s engagement with the character the tiger incident would fall a little flat.
