Statistician/visualizer/artist Edward Tufte is Professor Emeritus of Political Science, Statistics, and Computer Science at Yale University. He wrote, designed, and self-published 5 classic books on data visualization: The Visual Display of Quantitative Information (1983, 2001), Envisioning Information (1990), Visual Explanations: Images and Quantities, Evidence and Narrative (1997), Beautiful Evidence (2006), Seeing with Fresh Eyes: Meaning, Space, Data, Truth (2020).

The New York Times described Tufte as the "Leonardo da Vinci of data," Bloomberg as the "Galileo of graphics," and Nature as “The world’s leading analyst of graphic information.”

Having completed his most recent book Seeing with Fresh Eyes: Meaning, Space, Data, Truth, ET is now constructing a 234-acre tree farm and sculpture park in northwest Connecticut, which will show his artworks and remain open space in perpetuity.

He founded Graphics Press, ET Modern Gallery/Studio, and Hogpen Hill Farms.

    “A picture is worth a thousand words,” so the saying goes. Thus, an effective visualization, enriched by information, must count for so much more. But a misconstrued visualization, unfortunately, can lead to horrific outcomes from misinterpretations. How can we refine our visual thinking so that we can infer correct deductions while ignoring misplaced sketches? Visualization guru Edward Tufte teaches us how to reason about our world through informative displays in this helpful guide, replete with engaging prose, topics, and images. He instructs designers and readers of visualizations (which includes almost everyone today!) how to hone their interpretive crafts.

    Tufte is the all-time great in the art of visualization. Alongside graphical skill, he brings a love of intellectual history and art history to make readers’ minds spin. Even though his original field was political science, his interests span every form of scientific knowledge garnered by humans throughout the centuries. Therefore, even 25+ years later, the weight of his words surpasses the judgments of everyone else in the field.

    This specific book addresses how to interpret complex images (“visual explanations”) to help everyday life and professional work. He harkens to great intellectual discoveries like the rings of Saturn and the wave nature of light to illustrate foundational principles of information visualization. Although his insights about the computer have become dated because of the quickly evolving technology, his philosophy has stood the test of almost three decades of time. In fact, in an era of big data, his wisdom about interpreting complex displays pertains more, not less, to today, and his principles likewise become more prescient.

    Visual Explanations contains chapters on topics like: magic (the ultimate form of graphical deception), micro/macro effects, “visual confections” (a series of images to tell a complex story), parallel displays, and statistics in visuals. His thoroughness in his entire series of four visualization books will stand for generations as the classic works in the field. After reading them, all practitioners need do is to spruce up on recent technological developments in display.

    Obviously, those involved in the production of visualizations will glean the most from this book. Those in scientific discourse will benefit the most, but those in communication fields will also benefit from being able to mentally clean up others’ mistakes. With computing’s advance, visualizations increasingly convey key parts of life to the general public, so interpretive literacy has become key to the general reader. Business folks, who might be slightly put off by the scientific nature of the content, will nonetheless find many pearls of wisdom to take home. Each of Tufte’s works distill years, if not decades, of work into less than 200 pages, and his rich insight deserves to be pondered for generations.

    My fiance wanted this as a present, she's an engineer.

    While engineers may be great at making great results, presenting the information is still a challenge (especially to customers and management).

    She really likes this book. It provides a great guide on how to present information so that other engineers and the 'layman' can understand it. Data presentation can be quite a problem for engineers, and this book does a fantastic job at providing methods and means for producing useful and meaningful visual representations of findings.

    I'm not an engineer 'per se,' but I'm a degreed Mathematician. I flipped through the book, and it seems as though the book does a very good job at helping us that may be poor at presenting our technical ideas in a way such that it is easily comprehensible to others - in particular others that are not mathematicians or engineers.

    This aside, the limited reading I did was pretty easy, and his ideas and points were easy to comprehend and well articulated.

This book showed different images and sometimes you had to explain what was going on, but in this class we had to have a broader aspect in explaining because maybe we would have to explain to a certain culture and they would see it in another way.     Tufte's series on visualization will surely go down as classics. He's readable, he's right, and he's engaging.

    The only thing is, as pretty and as well-founded the book is in certain principles, it's my opinion that... that the average reader doesn't understand design problems enough that this book will present anything new.

    Meaning, the book is so intuitive, that, it seems pointless anyone would ever have to write a beautiful book like this -- *UNLESS* you have been stymied over and over again by mudglobs of creative ad hoc-kery and ad-hoc functionality, or, if you have been victimized by the unfunctional sheen of superglossy animated 3-d search engines (data visualizations, etc).

    Here's maybe the test -- if the price tag of this book seems excessive, you haven't been slogging through enough terrible textbooks to see what a light and airy gem of fresh... >sigh< air this book is.

    Otherwise - buy the Tufte series all at once, and see if you can't save bucks on the group discount.

    He has received so many accolades that one more won't add to his credibility.

    I have to confess to being a huge fan of Tufte though i came late to the party.
    This book explores the methods and values of excellence in presenting information on change: how you represent movement, actions and ideas in a way that enlightens, informs and educates.
    The book has excellent production values (what else did you expect) and is a a delight to explore. Tufte explains concepts and ideas in an engaging manner, pulling examples from hundreds of years of human history, from Hobbs "Leviathan", to abstract art of the 20th century. Amongst the pages are gems of insight from random places: be it descriptions fo magic tricks to descriptions of fish for those underwater! Brilliant.
    It's interesting to read and reflect on how this is still relevant in a digital age where images can be distorted, manipulated or created on a whim. Even more than ever, the integrity of data and information has to meet these standards to be credible and effective. Powerpoint slaves, take note!

    Very good book for anyone who does presentations and reports in their work.
    Since it's the third book of Edward Tufte I can greatly recommend the previous 2 as well.

    To keep in mind, especialy with the previous books, is that Tufte has a large focus on the use of graphs and visualisations as to help with analysis and give a technically good representation of your information and data.

    If your looking to know more about how to sell or pitch with your presentations you might want to look for something else as a complement.
