About this listen

Nominated for a 34th annual Lambda Literary Award • A scintillating thriller with an emotional punch: “The tension builds to unbearably claustrophobic levels. To say more would rob readers of the 'no, he didn’t' suspense that makes Bath Haus an unexpectedly twisted, heart-pounding cat-versus-mouse thriller" (Los Angeles Times).

Oliver Park, a recovering addict from Indiana, finally has everything he ever wanted: sobriety and a loving, wealthy partner in Nathan, a prominent DC trauma surgeon. Despite their difference in age and disparate backgrounds, they've made a perfect life together. With everything to lose, Oliver shouldn't be visiting Haus, a gay bathhouse. But through the entrance he goes, and it's a line crossed. Inside, he follows a man into a private room, and it's the final line. Whatever happens next, Nathan can never know. But then, everything goes wrong, terribly wrong, and Oliver barely escapes with his life.

He races home in full-blown terror as the hand-shaped bruise grows dark on his neck. The truth will destroy Nathan and everything they have together, so Oliver does the thing he used to do so well: he lies.

What follows is a classic runaway-train narrative, full of the exquisite escalations, edge-of-your-seat thrills, and oh-my-god twists. P. J. Vernon's Bath Haus is perfect for listeners curious for their next must-listen novel.

I looked at this book after listening to Vernon's other book, When You Find Me ( also worth it) and this book is exactly as described. Thriller. The narration of Oliver is exactly how I would picture him, and how I would feel if I WAS him. Jittery, nervous, anxious, keyed up. Listening to him narrate was like almost hearing nails on a chalkboard, or waiting for some surprise attack around the corner; just the right tone to put an edge on one's psyche while listening. A good stark contrast to Nathan, but not overly so. Just enough to truly distinguish their backgrounds, and the depth of character I find is quite good. As someone who sufferes from addiction issues, this book spells out the truths of what it feels like to fight and claw for every moment of sobriety, and It tells a deep, harrowing story of the lengths one may go to scratch the non healing wound of addiction, or run from it. This is Just my opinion, but the ending felt a little rushed, claustrophobic, and not as well planned as the rest of the book, but I will take a second listen as I always do on books that permeate layers of my soul. I may find a second listen just the ticket to digesting the enigmatic climax to this well woven piece.

spent a credit, worth every moment!

Have read another book by this author and this was not what I thought it would be however it was still engaging and the thriller and suspense themes are still at the core of the novel.

Excellent Narration, not predictable, kept me on the edge of my seat. Definitely a recommendation

Loved it😱

I listened to Bath Haus because I liked When You Find Me. I found the coarseness unsettling, but I learned some things about a lifestyle utterly different from my own. I had to keep Googling terms to understand the slang used in this culture. It was worth reading. Lots of turns which were very craftily done. Oliver struck me initially as a spoiled, selfish brat. He redeemed himself when the full story was told.

I loved the twists and turns in this. I did not expect this to turn into toxic relationship tropes, but fortunately that's my guilty pleasure. I loved and hated all of these characters! Narrators did an awesome job bringing them to life!

not what I expected

There is too much description of gay encounter, and I did not like the story. The narration was boring, and it’s a total waste of credit in my opinion.
