About this listen

Audie Award Finalist, Solo Narration - Female, 2014

Is it possible to write a sidesplitting novel about the breakup of the perfect marriage? If the writer is Nora Ephron, the answer is a resounding yes. For in this inspired confection of adultery, revenge, group therapy, and pot roast, the creator of Sleepless in Seattle reminds us that comedy depends on anguish as surely as a proper gravy depends on flour and butter.

Seven months into her pregnancy, Rachel Samstat discovers that her husband, Mark, is in love with another woman. The fact that the other woman has "a neck as long as an arm and a nose as long as a thumb and you should see her legs" is no consolation. Food sometimes is, though, since Rachel writes cookbooks for a living. And in between trying to win Mark back and loudly wishing him dead, Ephron's irrepressible heroine offers some of her favorite recipes. Heartburn is a sinfully delicious novel, as soul-satisfying as mashed potatoes and as airy as a perfect soufflé.

What the critics say

"Great fun. . . . Though Heartburn bristles ferociously with wit, it's not lacking in soul." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Nora Ephron's first novel is warm, witty and wise." ( Harper's Bazaar)

L’histoire peut sembler un peu banale initialement, sans grandes « surprises » ou revirements rocambolesques, mais le sens de l’humour de l’autrice est différent des autres livres du genre. Semi autobiographique, sincère et touchant.

the movie was fabulous so i decided to listen to the book. you don't even recognize the fact that meryl streep is the narrator. there is no story, none of the events relate to one another and she speaks so quickly that nothing makes sense. i honestly cannot believe that nora ephrom actually wrote it. by far the worst audio book i have ever tried to listen to. don't waste a credit on this one. the movie is great however.

worst book ever

Love Meryl Streep and could identify with her struggles as have been there three times.

I returned to this book a couple of times because it was just too airy for me to sink teeth into. However, finally feeling like a gossipy conversation, this book hit the mark. The subject matter has depth but the delivery is predominantly light and hilarious. Many killer lines! I recommend it for light reading. Meryl Streep nails it and it’s obvious she enjoys the story.

Very funny

The book left an odd impression, like I was witnessing someone's conversation with her shrink.

Long story about - what?
