What the critics say
"Davina Porter maintains the distinct voices she creates for each character throughout the lengthy narration. Her delivery of 18th-century language sounds authentic and is easily understandable." (AudioFile)
Editorial Review
Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander is the first book in a series of fantastic historical fiction that blends real-life history with mythical and magical themes. This first novel follows the main character British nurse Claire Randall on her travels in the Scottish Highlands, where she falls through time after encountering ancient standing stones on Fraser’s Ridge. She is immediately thrown into the hectic world of 18th Century Scotland and forced to adapt quickly to assimilate and - hopefully - find her way home again. From the highlands to old-world North Carolina, the storyline is a twisting and turning adventure of war, romance - in the rugged yet kind Jamie Fraser- destiny, and fate, which will capture you from the start and not let go until the very end. Genre blending and unique, Gabaldon weaves aspects of love stories with history and time travel and adventure for an exciting and highly entertaining story.
Davina Porter narrates the audiobook version, which brings the epic story to life in a new way. She has narrated over 400 audiobooks in her time, including several classics, and she brings her wealth of experience to this reading for a stunning performance. She was awarded the AudioFile Golden Voice narrator for this series. Her attention to small details and nuances in the story makes for a beautiful audio experience, whether you’re familiar with the series or hearing it for the first time. Fans of the story can enjoy more of Gabaldon’s world in the Lord John Grey companion novels.

Claire, the nurse who time travels to historical Scotland and finds herself married to a charming Scottish warrior, is a great lead. For the most part, I rooted for her choices and wanted her to succeed. She is out of her depth but capable of adapting and not letting anyone push her around.
Jamie in contrast is funny, charming, and exactly the kind of hero readers will be happy to follow. He’s complex, and his romance with Claire, though fiery, isn’t always easy.
There is only a dash of magic and it’s not the priority for the author. That is the romance and I think it succeeds in what it sets out to do. The setting is immersive and turns this into a sweeping love story.
It’s also very, very slow, and certain parts will not have aged well for some audiences. But if you are looking for a romance with two likeable leads in a historical setting, this could be the book for you!
