About this listen

Prepare to lose yourself in the enchanting new novel from Kate Morton.

My father called me Birdie; he said I was his little bird. Others knew me as his child, the clockmaker’s daughter. Edward called me his muse, his destiny. I am remembered as a thief, an imposter, a girl who rose above her station, who was not chaste. My real name, no one remembers. The truth about that summer, no one else knows.

In the summer of 1862, a group of young artists led by the passionate and talented Edward Radcliffe descends upon Birchwood Manor in rural Oxfordshire. Their plan: to spend a secluded summer month in a haze of inspiration and creativity. But by the time their stay is over, one woman has been shot dead while another has disappeared; a priceless heirloom is missing; and Edward Radcliffe’s life is in ruins.

Over 150 years later, Elodie Winslow, a young archivist in London, uncovers a leather satchel containing two seemingly unrelated items: a sepia photograph of an arresting-looking woman in Victorian clothing, and an artist’s sketchbook containing the drawing of a twin-gabled house on the bend of a river.

Why does Birchwood Manor feel so familiar to Elodie? And who is the beautiful woman in the photograph? Will she ever give up her secrets?

Told by multiple voices across time, The Clockmaker's Daughter is a story of murder, mystery and thievery, of art, love and loss. And flowing through it like a river is the voice of a woman who stands outside time, whose name has been forgotten by history but who has watched it all unfold: Birdie Bell, the clockmaker’s daughter.

slow to get into. I nearly gave up before the pace picked up and the story came together. I do understand why, and once the climax reached, I couldn't get the story out of my mind. oh Lily.

First and foremost, Joanne Froggatt is hands down one of the best narrators in the industry. I wish she would read everything!

I don’t know why but I found it difficult to be absorbed by this book. It’s well written but I did find parts dragged on a bit. I almost bothered that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I felt I should but can’t seem to pin point the reason why.

A bit drawn out

I love how Morton weaves disparate stories into a narrative web that catches a reader's heart and mind.

Truth, beauty, light...

My first book by K. Morton I will definitively pick up another one. And if it is narrated by Joanne Froggat it will be a bonus! The story is grabbing and unexpected turns, the only reason I do not give 5 stars is that it is sometimes difficult to keep up when it jump through the different times and thus keeping track of the characters can be a little confusing. I love the narrator performance and how she is able to gives each character their own voice without exaggeration .

Grabbing story Excellent narration

At the beginning you get individual pieces. They are detailed and interesting, but all seemingly unrelated. Slowly, as more pieces come together, you start to see threads and connections. But they are still seemingly disjointed. It's only at the end, all the individual pieces fits perfectly into a beautiful picture.

The story is told like a jigsaw puzzle

Another one I can’t stop listening too. Her characters are so intriguing and I love how the story winds together past and present.
A really good listen and safe for little ears too - as I’m often listening with my kids present ☺️

Kate Morton never disappoints!!!!

Even though the listener/reader knew the connections in the end, I feel that it was unresolved amongst the characters..
I guess that leaves it open for some sort of sequel..
Story was long, grateful to have listened instead of read...

Typically magical as all Kate’s novels, loved it and loved the performance. All the subtle voices etc brought everyone to life and I found it easy to follow even with many characters and dates

Kate Morton’s magic

A little confusing for an audio book with all the jumping around between characters and dates. Sometimes hard to follow. Wasn't sure if I'd missed something when I reached the end. The narrator, however, was very good.

Good, but confusing.

I loved the story, it had me completely engrossed. I’ve always loved Joanne Froggatt’s narration and I search for her when I’m looking for audio books.
This story was magical, full of complete characters that made you care about them. I would heartily recommend.
