About this listen

Life is waiting to happen to Hubert Bird. But first he has to open his front door and let it in.

In weekly phone calls to his daughter in Australia, widower Hubert Bird paints a picture of the perfect retirement, packed with fun, friendship and fulfilment.

But Hubert Bird is lying.

The truth is day after day drags by without him seeing a single soul.

Until, that is, he receives some good news - good news that in one way turns out to be the worst news ever, news that will force him out again, into a world he has long since turned his back on.

Now, Hubert faces a seemingly impossible task: to make his real life resemble his fake life before the truth comes out.

Along the way Hubert stumbles across a second chance at love, renews a cherished friendship and finds himself roped into an audacious community scheme that seeks to end loneliness once and for all.

Life is certainly beginning to happen to Hubert Bird. But with the origin of his earlier isolation always lurking in the shadows will he ever get to live the life he's pretended to have for so long?

From best-selling author Mike Gayle, All the Lonely People is by turns a funny and moving meditation on love, race, old age and friendship that will not only charm and uplift, but also remind you of the power of ordinary people to make an extraordinary difference.

Wonderful book. Engaging and loving story about a redemptive relationship between 2 unlikely protagonists, that explores the changing attitudes towards both racism, and extreme poverty. But as the title suggests, the key theme is loneliness and how we deal with it.

Brilliant.

Be more Hubert. Be more Ashleigh.

I have been waiting patiently for this book to be released and I can honestly say I have not been disappointed. What appears to be a simple story has shocking twists that leave you open mouthed. I love Gayles books and have for 20 years but this is definitely his best book to date. I just hope I do not have to wait too long for his next master piece

absolutely fantastic

I absolutely loved this from start to finish and I have to say, the narration was one of the best I’ve ever heard. I found it hard to believe that it was only one narrator.
A wonderful story with lots of twists.

Another great book from Mike Gayle

I’ve always loved Mike Gayle’s books but this one is something else.
An absolutely delightful, although sometimes a hard listen; this story is one that will stay with me and will make me reconsider my thoughts and actions towards others.
Outstanding.

Just finished and am wiping away the tears

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the tale. I found Huberts voice a little strident to begin with but warmed to it. Definitely worth listening to.

A moving story
