About this listen

From the author of Lost Souls, Drawing Blood, and Wormwood comes a thrilling and chilling novel that best-selling author Peter Straub says serves as a “guidebook to hell”.

To serial slayer Andrew Compton, murder is an art, the most intimate art. After feigning his own death to escape from prison, Compton makes his way to the United States with the sole ambition of bringing his “art” to new heights. Tortured by his own perverse desires, and drawn to possess and destroy young boys, Compton inadvertently joins forces with Jay Byrne, a dissolute playboy who has pushed his “art” to limits even Compton hadn’t previously imagined. Together, Compton and Byrne set their sights on an exquisite young Vietnamese-American runaway, Tran, whom they deem to be the perfect victim.

Swiftly moving from the grimy streets of London’s Piccadilly Circus to the decadence of the New Orleans French Quarter, Poppy Z. Brite dissects the landscape of torture and invites us into the mind of a killer. Exquisite Corpse confirms Brite as a writer who defies categorization. It is a novel for those who dare trespass where the sacred and profane become one.

Be warned, the descriptions are very graphic and for someone who reads lots of books about true crime, it was too much for me. Storyline is also a bit thin

Extremely graphic

Story is ok, some of the scenes are graphic and brutal but for horror fans it’s nothing special at all. It’s more like a gay porn horror than anything else

Not as gory as some of the reviews made out

I started listening because I wanted an extreme horror book. I kept listening because of the side characters and the deep, heartbreaking dialogues and stories. the gore and horror almost became uninteresting compared to Trans and Lukes story. absolutely amazingly written and terrific job of the reader if bringing each and every single character to life . I could tell just by the voice who was talking. the story brought tears to my eyes and disgusted and shocked me in equal parts. great book and listening experience!

intense story and very strong characters

I remember reading poppy as a teenager. The characters always so enjoyable as some are horrific. I wish they would turn the short stories into an audiobook. I loved Swamp Foetus. still have it along with all the other books, all well read and loved.

marvelous

the voices for the separate characters are so distinct and well done that at times it felt more like watching a play, really excellently acted.

Joshua Saxton nails it

The author is a poet. I don't know of any other human who can so completely spellbind and mezmerise using only words like this.
if you're looking at this book, you hopefully know what you are in for. If not - take a chance!

Also, the narrating is SUPERB! No annoying breathing, the voices are Perfect, everything is flawless.

All in all, I have no complaints, save that it didn't go on for longer. I'm on my third listen now, and still as enraptured.

An absolute artist!

An excellent reading of one of the most tragic and twisted romances you'll ever hear. If Horrific Romance is a genre then this is the absolute top of the list!

Love and Cannibalism!

I was 19 when I got my first Poppy Z. Brite .

Lost Souls made me feel the universe within these pages were created for me.

Exquisite Corpse was the very next of Brite's I read.

This book is grotesque, you may find yourself thinking if they made a film of this would it be too much me to handle.

I liked and hated the fact that there was no good, bad, evil or angel, just need/want versus offering yourself even if it seems without choice, surrendering yourself to what is happening, because you can't change what's coming.

Dare I say this book in parts is erotic, I hope it was intended to be, how could it not be, given the descriptions presented to us?

There are so many parts that deal with hunger craving and need, addiction, physical and mental health.

I do wonder if liking this book just as much as I do makes me a bad person.

I could loop this to repeat, that's an option?

Okay, buckle up, because "Exquisite Corpse" is not messing around. If you're brave enough to dive into the darkness, though, this audiobook is seriously a work of art. Poppy Z. Brite's writing is just...wow. It's so rich and twisted, like every line is dripping with creepy atmosphere. The story is definitely out there, pushing boundaries with its obsession and violence, but somehow it's also incredibly poetic, even in its most brutal moments.

And the narrator, Joshua Saxon? He nailed it! They totally capture that slow-burn, menacing vibe of Brite's world. There's this perfect balance of intimacy and threat that just pulls you right into the characters' messed-up heads. It's chilling, for sure, but also strangely captivating. Honestly, the performance sticks with you long after you've finished listening.

This is extreme horror done right – disturbing and intense, but also beautifully written. Not many books can pull off that balance. If you're into stories that go all the way and a performance that makes every unsettling moment feel real, you HAVE to listen to this.

Basically, it's a modern cult classic, and this audiobook version is just bloody brilliant.

Bloody Brilliant!
