Feeling the pressure of everyone hyping up this book but sticking with my 3 stars review.
I found the overall story disturbing - the narrative pointing towards artificial intelligence replacing disabled folks. But this is not a theme in any of the big reviews out there. So it left me wondering - have I been reading a different book?

Disturbing and tad overrated

Maybe for young adults, I wanted more depth. The accent of the narrator doing an English accent was very annoying.

Enjoyable but...

While I can see what they were trying to do, the narration really spoiled this for me. The affected English accents were horrible to listen to. if all the voices had sounded as natural as Josie's, this would have been so much more enjoyable to listen to. I found the narration from the AF's point of view quite dull but tried to ignore this as it seemed appropriate for the character. Altogether this audiobook was hard work, and I wish I'd read the book instead.

The narrator ruined it for me

The story premise is absolutely brilliant and the final chapters are emotional and thought provoking. The first few and final chapters are so good as to forgive the flaws in the book. An English accent is the worst I have ever heard outside of satire. Imagine an English person being narrated by an American and them sounding like a satirical send-up of the queen. It's an absolute embarrassment but luckily the character is not in it much. Not enough of the world the characters inhabit is revealed early enough to join up with some of the words used by the characters, so you have to wait to understand some parts. Some of the plot towards the end is just so implausible too just to try and tie up some loose ends, a rational character suddenly does something so implausible just to fit the plot which is ridiculous. But as I said the story, the premise, the start and emotional ending is so gripping and fascinating and the book is written in such an unusual manner as to provide a brilliant perspective of the world the character inhabits. You can forgive the issues I described above because its so worth a read.

A gripping subject with terrible narration.

This is a very thought provoking book, very different from the usual futuristic android scenarios.
I really enjoyed Sura Siu’s style of narration as I thought it suited the main character perfectly.

Great story and perfect narration

I got to the end of this book and thought ‘what! That’s it? What did that mean’
So much left to guess about, with no clarification.

I wanted to love this book
