About this listen

Stephen's god died on the longest day of the year....

Three years later, Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong. Now the pair must navigate a web of treachery, beset on all sides by spies and poisoners, while a cryptic killer stalks one step behind....

From the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of Swordheart and The Twisted Ones comes a saga of murder, magic, and love on the far side of despair.

The characters have faults of their own and there is a mystery to solve. I find the narration a bit emotionless

Very enjoyable story and whilst a romance it was also a fine adventure or was it the other way round. I am enjoying the work of T Kingfisher greatly and will be looking for a fifth story to listen to. Before I forget the narrator Jesse Vilinsky did an excellent job bringing everything to life.

This book feels like a hug. It wraps you up in a blanket and keeps you safe. It's so different to anything else I've read (listened to) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Now am I desperate for the next one? No, but maybe one day. Overall this book felt light and heartwarming. I loved the narration very much; it made it nicely humorous and cosy.

Nice change having an older protagonist. My only wish was that the story was longer!

Cool story

Cute and cosy, but unfortunately, whilst there's technically nothing wrong with the book, it just didn't really do anything for me. 🤷🏻‍♀️
It was one of those books that, for me, was just happening. I was never that engrossed or moved by anything. If I'm honest, I probably would have DNF'd if I wasn't reading it as book group pick.

The narration is another part that was technically fine – I was never irritated, he does other voices really well etc – it was just so chilled out that even speeded up, it never added any extra excitement.

it was OK.

Love this world, a couple of characters already featured in 'Swordheart' - which is also a great read (if you haven't already), I didn't realise this series was set in the same world so was pleasantly surprised. I really love the characters, the story was great. Highly recommend.

After reading Nettle and Bone, I wanted to read more by this author. As someone who rarely likes romance in books, my investment in their relationship took me by surprise! I loved their gradually relationship and I felt the world was interesting and I was taken in by the mystery. I went ahead and bought the rest in the series. The narrator does an excellent job at giving distinct voices for each character.

A compelling romance and vibrant world

Such a fabulous mix of genres, hitting the romance and fantasy tropes in a wildly entertaining manner. Stephen the Grace are caught up in a court intrigue plot, and the cast of background characters are as delightful as the protagonists. The reader is excellent.

I enjoyed this book much more than I possibly expected. I don't usually read romance stories (and possibly because of this, I was taken a bit by surprise just how horny the story is!) but I've heard good things about T.Kingfisher and their fantasy writing so wanted to try them out. It was definitely worth it.
The characters were intriguing and the world building was excellent (this was my first book by T.Kingfisher so I'm not sure if the world is shared with any of her other book series). There's plenty of the secondary or tertiary characters that I'd like to hear more about in later books as well as the city state politics and the inter-temple rivalries. The romance plot line was definitely front and centre in the story, possibly to the detriment of the two other plots that interwove with it. I'd have liked those plotlines to have had a bit more page time but they're ingesting none the less.
I'm still undecided on the performance. The delivery matched for one of the protagonists very well and fitted their side of the story, but it left the rest very flat and almost monotone. I think I'm just tipping in favour of giving them the benefit of the doubt in what they were going for.
Altogether, definitely recommended :)

Interesting start to a series
