About this listen
Stephen's god died on the longest day of the year....
Three years later, Stephen is a broken paladin, living only for the chance to be useful before he dies. But all that changes when he encounters a fugitive named Grace in an alley and witnesses an assassination attempt gone wrong. Now the pair must navigate a web of treachery, beset on all sides by spies and poisoners, while a cryptic killer stalks one step behind....
From the Hugo and Nebula Award-winning author of Swordheart and The Twisted Ones comes a saga of murder, magic, and love on the far side of despair.

Cool story

It was one of those books that, for me, was just happening. I was never that engrossed or moved by anything. If I'm honest, I probably would have DNF'd if I wasn't reading it as book group pick.
The narration is another part that was technically fine – I was never irritated, he does other voices really well etc – it was just so chilled out that even speeded up, it never added any extra excitement.
it was OK.

The characters were intriguing and the world building was excellent (this was my first book by T.Kingfisher so I'm not sure if the world is shared with any of her other book series). There's plenty of the secondary or tertiary characters that I'd like to hear more about in later books as well as the city state politics and the inter-temple rivalries. The romance plot line was definitely front and centre in the story, possibly to the detriment of the two other plots that interwove with it. I'd have liked those plotlines to have had a bit more page time but they're ingesting none the less.
I'm still undecided on the performance. The delivery matched for one of the protagonists very well and fitted their side of the story, but it left the rest very flat and almost monotone. I think I'm just tipping in favour of giving them the benefit of the doubt in what they were going for.
Altogether, definitely recommended :)
Interesting start to a series
