About this listen

This was meant to be the perfect trip. The northern lights. A press launch on a luxury cruise ship. A chance for travel journalist Lo Blackwood to recover from a traumatic break-in that has left her on the verge of collapse and to work out what she wants from her relationship.

Except things don't go as planned. Woken in the night by screams, Lo rushes to her window to see a body thrown overboard from the next-door cabin. But the records show that no one ever checked in to that cabin, and no passengers are missing from the boat.

Exhausted, emotional and increasingly desperate, Lo has to face the fact that her sleep problems might be driving her mad, or she is trapped on a boat with a murderer - and she is the sole witness....

I've never read Ruth Ware before, I didn't know what to expect, but this novel was just too melodramatic for my taste, like a 21st century Barbara Cartland!

Perhaps I'm over reacting to the character's reaction to being burgled, but it puts the story on an uncomfortable edge which borders on irritating and over the top imaginings! So I'm probably just intolerant of the whole thing or just unsympathetic. Either way, I found it very difficult to continue to care about what happens to her. So, I gave up the struggle.

Listen to the sample - the entire book seems to be like that, before you even arrive at the story! Not my cup of tea!

Just. Too. Melodramatic!!

This is the second book from Ruth Ware that I have listened to and again, I was surprised at how the slightly broken heroine somehow didn't annoy me and instead I found myself relating to her. I think this is partly due to good writing but also helped by an excellent narrator whose voice manages to relay the internal conflict of the lead character without making her sound whiny and annoying. While it isn't difficult to see where the plot is going from a reasonable way out, the author manages to keep you interested right to the end. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Another good listen from this author that I couldn't switch off.

Would you listen to The Woman in Cabin 10 again? Why?

And again. This is a really exciting book. Lots of where and how's Did Lo imagine? If not then ???

What other book might you compare The Woman in Cabin 10 to, and why?

I have read other books where this situation arises, but can't think of one set on a boat.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Can't pick out one the whole book was one great story

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was so good I lost almost a nights sleep so anxious was I to find out what happened

Any additional comments?

I gave the story 4 points because I felt the culprit was so predictable. Guessed almost right away, kept hoping I was wrong, but alas I wasn't.

One for a long jiurney

Nearly gave up a few times. The narrator is good as is the plot but it's a bit tedious at times!

Long winded

Thoroughly enjoyed this book ... it was tense, really well written, and loved the ending. Can’t wait to read her next book.

My favourite Ruth Ware book to date

Is the second novel by Ruth Ware that I have listened to on audible and I enjoyed it just as much as the first! (The Death of Mrs Westaway)

The story pulls you in immediately and you are left guessing and theorising right until the end - Ruth Ware is a supremely skilled storyteller!

Imogen Church is a talented performer and her range of character voices are consistent and believable.

Fans of murder mystery and detective novels would enjoy this, but worth a listen if fans of other genres too.

Absolutely brilliant!

Twists and turns the whole way through , sinister sense of menace gives this book it's gripping story.

After a long run of 'poor' listens, when I thought maybe I had 'gone off' audiobooks altogether, I really, really enjoyed this book. It is both well written and well narrated. The story is very 'Agatha Christie' with a limited cast of characters isolated on a small ship. It is a book that is written entirely in the first person, and all the way through I was completely 'on the side' of the main character, who was flawed, human and believable. A large part of the tale depends on the fact that she is viewed as an unreliable witness (similar to Girl on the train) and this is made credible and tense as the drama unfolds. The ending is, of course, in the best Agatha Christie tradition, all a bit unlikely, but entertaining none the less, and I was satisfied by the ending, which tied up all of the loose knots. If you have read In a Dark Dark Wood and thought it was weak (which I did) don't be put off - this is a far better book.

Much better than her first book

The story promised so much, but the dialogue quickly became repetitive and the plot development was monotonous.

Disappointing

Lo hopes the work-related cruise will help to shake the fear of the break in she suffered but within hours she realises that not only has her ex-boyfriend been invited but also, she has some serious mental scars leftover with the bruises. Somewhere in the Norwegian sea, everything starts to go wrong, and she doesn’t know who she can trust. It can only get worse.

Lo is the kind of character the reader likes, can identify with, but also wants to scream at. She can’t help but choose the wrong path every time and this is something we all recognise in ourselves from time to time. Her demise is inevitable and we read with a sinking feeling that is balanced by small rays of hope.

This thriller kept me reading but I can’t say it was a comfortable read. The confines of the boat were stifling and Lo’s anxiety was catching. I was on edge and because I couldn’t tell where the threat was coming from I felt almost as scared as the poor protagonist which is exactly what you want from a thriller.

Nail bitingly tense
