Fifty years after its original publication, Catch-22 remains a cornerstone of American literature and one of the funniest - and most celebrated - novels of all time. In recent years, it has been named to "best novels" lists by Time, Newsweek, the Modern Library, and the London Observer. Set in Italy during World War II, this is the story of the incomparable, malingering bombardier Yossarian, a hero who is furious because thousands of people he has never met are trying to kill him. But his real problem is not the enemy - it is his own army, which keeps increasing the number of missions the men must fly to complete their service. Yet if Yossarian makes any attempt to excuse himself from the perilous missions he's assigned, he'll be in violation of Catch-22, a hilariously sinister bureaucratic rule: A man is considered insane if he willingly continues to fly dangerous combat missions, but if he makes a formal request to be removed from duty, he is proven sane and therefore ineligible to be relieved.

Since its publication in 1961, no novel has matched Catch-22's intensity and brilliance in depicting the brutal insanity of war. This 50th-anniversary edition commemorates Joseph Heller's masterpiece with a new introduction by Christopher Buckley; personal essays on the genesis of the novel by the author; a wealth of critical responses and reviews by Norman Mailer, Alfred Kazin, Anthony Burgess, and others; rare papers from Joseph Heller's personal archive; and a selection of advertisements from the original publishing campaign that helped turn Catch-22 into a cultural phenomenon. Here, at last, is the definitive edition of a classic of world literature.

Joseph Heller's 1961 novel Catch-22 is undoubtedly one of the most important literary works of the 20th century. Set during World War II, the novel mostly concerns the actions of Captain John Yossarian and his comrades in the fictional 256th US Army Air Squadron. Heller explores many hefty themes, which, along with Heller's sharp, observant, and lyrical prose, make the book fertile ground for thought-provoking discussions and memorable quotes.

First, if you like smart, satirical humor, you can do no better than this book. It is hilarious!!

Next, this is hands down the best narrator performance I’ve ever heard. Sanders does amazing. In fact, he’s the reason I decided to write this review. I almost never write reviews for anything, but his performance was simply exemplary.

This is a great story and a terrible one. I loved it and I hated it. I was inspired and discouraged at the same time.

Classic yet timeless

STARTLED - and wincing in pain, you frantically scratch your second pair of wireless earbuds free from your throbbing ears..
into the hot tub water.

The passage was something like this:

"OH! GOD! OH GOD-OH GOD-OH GOD!!
...he said, in a barely audible whisper"

Ironically, incompetency indicates a lack of the faculty to identify its presence.

Dear Narrator,
They're called exclamation marks, my good man. Screamation marks are something else, entirely, and have a peculiar tendency to not exist.

I hate it when readers decide to mumble or scream. Accents are fine, but "realism" isn't worth not being able to hear the words or having to tear off my headphones in pain.

good story, awful reading

I had to put this book down 1/4 of the way through. The circular anti logic and repetition made me feel like I was experiencing an awful deja vu and I was astonished some people like this book. After finishing some other books I came back to give it another chance and I'm so glad I did.
The non-linear, repetitive story was grinding on me at first but after I got more context about the characters through every chapter I really felt for each one of them and knew their hyperbolic and satirical motives and goals and fears. The author lures you in to this silly adventure of the Bombadier, only to slowly turn on you from this comedic experience to a graphic trauma filled horror. I was hooked and was eager to keep hearing about his misadventure in Italy and his ineffective attempts to go home.

The reader on the otherhand had me bewildered. He attempts to do voices, but they nearly all sound the same. What I thought was iconic Jossarian yelling turns out to just be his yelling voice and every character does it. He doesn't do a stellar job and to make things worse there is random interruptions of military fanfare. It doesn't occur at the beginning of chapters or any pattern that I could figure out. It just gets thrown in and really interrupts my experience.

I recommend the story and sticking with it despite the confusing start. It comes together and really rewards you for the investment. That being said, you might be better off with a different reader.

Narrator does well enough. The story is kind of hard to follow since its all out of order, definitely needs to be read/listened to more than once. Made me laugh out loud buy overall I still feel very "meh" about this audible. I say physicallh read it

Joseph Heller's writing comes alive from the moment the story is narrated to the end. Jay O. Sanders' talented reading skills with are superb. Very entertaining, forcing me to laugh out loud, while taking my long walks, and making other people think I am crazy.

Funny and Entertaining from Beginning to End

the best reason to read this book are the intricate oxymoronic pros. This is a funny little sad book. it's good it is this sad because if they took out any of the sadness it would not be near as funny. this book is full of non graphic sex scenes very graphic death scenes and continually makes fun of the top-heavy bureaucratic armed forces.

a comical tragedy

Someone from Audible needs to fix the volume equalization on this audiobook. I had to return it since large sections couldn’t be heard. Up until that point the book was great!
