Willy Wonka's famous chocolate factory is opening at last!

But only five lucky children will be allowed inside. And the winners are: Augustus Gloop, an enormously fat boy whose hobby is eating; Veruca Salt, a spoiled-rotten brat whose parents are wrapped around her little finger; Violet Beauregarde, a dim-witted gum-chewer with the fastest jaws around; Mike Teavee, a toy pistol-toting gangster-in-training who is obsessed with television; and Charlie Bucket, our hero, a boy who is honest and kind, brave and true, and good and ready for the wildest time of his life!

Editorial reviews

"Douglas Hodge delivers Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in a briskly melodic canter, and his rendering holds its own against memories of cinema's Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp." (Gregory Maguire, The New York Times Book Review)

Critic reviews

"Rich in humor, acutely observant, Dahl lets his imagination rip in fairyland." (The New York Times)

“Roald Dahl sometimes shared a tonal kinship with Ogden Nash, and he could demonstrate a verbal inventiveness nearly Seussian...[His] stories work better in audio than in print.” (The New York Times)

You can tell the reader genuinely enjoyed reading this book. I also enjoyed how he chose to embellish some of the characters voices.

I’m 55 - children all grown - but this book will always be a favorite. What an amazing imagination Ronald Dahl had!!

Douglas Hodge was a fun and enthusiastic narrator. I couldn’t imagine anybody narrating this beloved story better.

We listened to this at bedtime every night for a week. This book is written almost identically to the movie with very vivid descriptions. I highly recommend this for children and adults alike.

This book is teeming with twists and turns and wild wide eyed fun. Plain simple fun for both young and old and gives the reader a real 'feel good' experience as they root and cheer for Charlie, who just couldnt be more deserving!

A great story RIDE!
